When I checked out the files (now they’re in FLAC format), the audio codec reported was ALAC, and I saw some nice spectrograms without noticeable cutoffs, so I thought KevinG had ripped somehow lossless streams. I googled that and it seemed possible, because Spotify began experimenting lossless streaming with some users. But looking at the size of the files I guess this could be very high quality Vorbis sound captured from the soundcard and later stored with ALAC codec, to not lose any quality. As I’m not sure, I’ll edit my fist message to not mislead anyone.
m4a is the file extension used for mp4 files that have audio only. He must have forgotten to rename them.
