Sideways is a 2004 American independent black comedy drama film directed by Alexander Payne and written by Jim Taylor and Payne. A film adaptation of Rex Pickett’s novel of the same name, Sideways follows two men in their forties, Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti), a depressed teacher and unsuccessful writer and Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), a past-his-prime actor, who take a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County wine country to celebrate Jack’s upcoming wedding. Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen also star.

This an example of where the music made more of an impression than the film. I found the two lead males totally unsympathetic and have only seen the film once. The music though is one of my favourite albums.

It is with this great film that I reconsider my opinion on Rolfe Kent. I thought he was just another composer stuck with making music for comedy films. I was very wrong. He may be stuck but he has a distinct voice and always comes up with interesting ideas even in the most mundane films. He deserves higher profile projects which I thought he would get after the success of “Wedding Crashers” (what’s with the weddings!)… PM sent.
