The most obvious question, when it comes to a MechWarrior 2 game rip is why? The music is already on the game disks, so there doesn’t initially seem to be much of a point. There are two reasons I decided to do it. First, different versions of the game and its expansions have different music. It’s bit like Descent 2, but not nearly as bad. For example, the Titanium Trilogy release of Ghost Bear’s Legacy has several extra tracks, but another track is missing, and the rest are shorter than in other versions. As far as I know, you need more than one copy of each game in order to to have every track. Second, there are seven MIDI tracks in 31st Century Combat, which you can’t just play by popping in the CD.

This soundtrack exists to put all of the music in one place. It has the redbook audio from all three games, plus the MIDIs from 31st Century Combat, and the audio from most cutscenes that contain music. The beginning and end of each disc is punctuated by Bitching Betty voice clips. This was a bit of a last minute decision; I don’t know that it really improves anything. There’s also a hidden bonus track that isn’t from MechWarrior 2, but I think you’ll recognize it when you hear it. (It isn’t actually hidden, but it isn’t mentioned in the track list. If this soundtrack were actually on CD, it would be attached to the end of disc 1 like "Siege of Madrigal" on the Halo OST.)

Most of the time spent on this soundtrack was spent making the booklet and album art. I’ve been meaning to do a full complement of art for a rip for a while ever since Metroid: In the Action (Thread 192723), actually. But I always got bored before I got past the cover. Please look them over, and tell me if you like it and would like to see something like this again or if it’s a waste of time. Critiques are welcome. I should probably mention that the album art is intended for a "chubby", transparent, 3 disc jewel case. That’s why the front cover isn’t perfectly square. It’s also why the back of the booklet has the menu screen from GBL; you’re supposed to see it behind the second CD.

Actually, it looks good! Given the right artistic choices and imagery are applied I think it’s well worth the time. This would look great sitting out on a stand or shelf.

Way to go dude, one of the best soundtracks for a game ever imo.
