Film Mix | Complete Score | Official Release
24-BIT & 16-BIT FLAC
I began listening to the score as soon as the score was released later last year, but I managed to watch the film itself only this spring. So I had plenty of time to listen, appreciate and love this score way before I had the opportunity to see the film. What I love the most of the score is its synths, the minimalistic approach to themes as motifs, the weirdness of the vocals and the atmospheric music he managed to do.
This score is not for everyone, I know many people here that truly hated this score.
Nonetheless, I decided to work on something bigger: since the film has Max Richter’s beautiful piece "On the Nature of Daylight" in its opening and ending and another piece of source music, I wanted to rip them from the Blu-Ray just to fill the gaps of the score.
When I looked at the audio channels, I discovered that the back channel was almost entirely clean of SFX and dialogue, a true miracle! So I decided to go further and try to make a Film Mix of the entire score.
It turns out, that this is probably the easiest Film Mix ever to do, since most of the cues from the Complete Score were already Film Versions and the full score is almost 1 hour long. All I had to do was to mix a few cues, edit some others, rip the source music and a couple of inserts, all done in a couple of days!
So, that said, let’s get started! 😀

Film Mix of the Complete Score (24-bit & 16-bit)
Music by Jhann Jhannsson
(24-bit, 48 kHz) → 590 MB | 26 Tracks | 1:10:44
(16-bit, 44.1 kHz) → 248 MB | 26 Tracks | 1:10:44
To work on the Film Mix I downloaded via torrent a high quality rip of the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, 48kHz, 24-bit, then I worked with the stems and the Complete Score (24-bit and 48kHz as well) on Audacity.
Every cue of the Film Mix is basically in its Film Version. There might still be some minimal differences (microedits, micro inserts) between these cues and the Film Versions, differences that due to the nature of the score itself are almost impossible to detect, but nothing worth of ripping from the Blu-Ray with its faint SFX and dialogue. All of the noticeable differences are presented here. Check the breakdown tag below the tracklist for all the details.

BREAKDOWN
Studio Logos
Ripped from all Blu-Ray channels.
1m01s On the Nature of Daylight (Clean Version)
Ripped from the back channel. There’s no SFX or dialogue.
In the middle channel along with some faint dialogue from Amy Adams, there’s the bass played along with the strings in Max Richter’s cue. I added back & middle channel rip in the Bonus Tracks.
1m02 Shells Landing
From the Complete Score.
1m03 Around the Clock News
From the Complete Score.
1m04 The Shell
From the Complete Score.
2m01 Approaching the Shell (Film Edit)
In the film the cue is slightly lengthened. There were also two small sections of the second half of the cue that switch places in the film, I replicated both of them.
2m02 Fear of the Shells
From the Complete Score.
2m03 Logogram Breakthrough (Film Version)
Opening section ripped from the Blu-Ray, with light SFX. No dialogue is heard. The rest is from the Complete Score.
3m01 Fear of the Shells v2
From the Complete Score.
3m02 Hazmat Off
From the Complete Score.
3m03 Teaching Montage
From the Complete Score.
3m04 Fear of the Shells v3
From the Complete Score.
4m01 The Big Question
From the Complete Score.
4m02 Planting the Bomb
From the Complete Score.
4m03 Explosion (Film Edit)
In the film a section in the middle had a much higher volume, I replicated that.
5m01 Ultimatum
From the Complete Score.
5m02 One of Twelve
From the Complete Score.
5m03 Non Zero Sum Game (Film Edit)
In the film there’s a silenced small section, I replicated that.
5m04 No Linear Time (Film Edit)
The Complete Score version has an entire section in the ending that was cut in the film. I edited that out of the Complete Score to match the Film Version.
5m05 Military Buildup (Film Mix)
In the film, the ending is mixed together with "6m01 Decyphering". I replicated that.
6m01 Decyphering (Film Mix)
In the film, the opening is mixed together with "5m05 Military Buildup". I replicated that.
6m02s Serenade in E Major, Op. 22, B. 52: IV Larghetto (Clean Version)
Ripped from the back channel of the Blu-Ray. Small SFX heard in the very opening and light SFX in the rest of the cue (or background noise from the source cue recording?). No dialogue heard.
In the film there’s some noise-synth that introduces this source cue. While the back channels is mostly clean, I added a rip of the back, middle and (partially) front channel in the Bonus Tracks.
6m03 Louise Calls Chang (Film Version)
In the film the cue starts when 6m02s is still playing, the cue is slightly lengthened and there’s a more prominent brass (or what instrument that is) note in the beginning.
So I ripped the whole first part of the cue from the Blu-Ray, I lengthened the Complete Score cue and edited them together. There’s no SFX or dialogue is the Blu-Ray ripped part.
6m04 Shells Rise (Film Edit)
In the film the cue is slightly lengthened and the end is mixed with the next cue. I replicated that.
1m01sreuse On the Nature of Daylight (Clean Version)
I ripped the "On the Nature of Daylight" track from the back channel and mixed it with "6m04 Shells Rise" like in the film. There’s no SFX or dialogue.
In the middle channel along with some faint dialogue from Amy Adams, there’s the bass played along with the strings in Max Richter’s cue. I added back & middle channel rip in the Bonus Tracks.
6m05 End Credits (Film Version)
Ripped from all Blu-Ray channels.
And here you go with my first Film Mix links:

Bonus Tracks to the Film Mix (24-bit & 16-bit)
Music by Jhann Jhannsson
(24-bit, 48 kHz) → 405 MB | 14 Tracks | 47:53
(16-bit, 44.1 kHz) → 170 MB | 14 Tracks | 47:53
In this set I put additional tracks to the Film Mix: the original versions of the cues that were altered for the Film Mix, and a few variations of the source cues. Check the breakdown tag below the tracklist for all the details.
I tagged the cue so that if you put these files in the same folder of the Film Mix, they’re already in chronological order 🙂

BREAKDOWN
1m01s On the Nature of Daylight (Dialogue Version)
Ripped from the back and middle channels of the Blu-Ray because it features the bass played along with the strings (I removed it from the Film Mix set due to Amy Adams’ narration voice heard in the background). However the voice doesn’t spoil the music, I actually find that it improves the listening a bit on the music.
1m04 The Shell (SFX Intro)
The entire opening consists in the slowly fading sound of the helicopter rotors as the music slowly grows over that. I found it a great effect in the film and it might work as well for some listeners.
2m01 Approaching the Shell (CS Version)
The film version features some variations of lenth and some edits, this is the original cue.
2m03 Logogram Breakthrough (CS Version)
The film features a different opening, this is the original cue.
4m03 Explosion (CS Version)
This is the original version of the cue heard in the film.
5m03 Non Zero Sum Game (CS Version)
This is the original version of the cue heard in the film.
5m04 No Linear Time (CS Version)
This is the full-lenth version of the cue heard in the film.
5m05 Military Buildup (CS Version)
Here is the version with clean ending.
6m01 Decyphering (CS Version)
Here is the version with clean opening.
6m02s Serenade in E Major, Op. 22, B. 52: IV Larghetto (SFX Intro)
In the film the source music is introduced by some noise-synth, that I didn’t want to include in the Film Mix. I put them in here.
This cue is to be played with "6m03 Louise Calls Chang" of the Film Mix.
6m03 Louise Calls Chang (CS Version)
This is the original lenth version with clean opening of the cue.
6m04 Shells Rise (CS Version)
This is the original lenth version with clean ending of the cue.
1m01sreuse On the Nature of Daylight (Dialogue Version / Clean Opening)
Ripped from the back and middle channels of the Blu-Ray because it features the bass played along with the strings (I removed it from the Film Mix set due to Amy Adams’ narration voice heard in the background). However the voice doesn’t spoil the music, I actually find that it improves the listening a bit on the music.
To ease the listening experience, I edited a clean opening to Max Richter’s cue from 1m01s.
6m05 End Credits (CS Version)
The film version of the end credits is slighty different. Here is the Complete Score version.

The 16-bit version was first posted by Bart Oss, but for some reason the thread has been deleted. Here’s a re-upload of the OST in lossless.
I also present the 24-bit version of the Official Release, which I found via torrent. Looking at the spectrograms, it looks legit. Not sure if it was necessary, but having both the Complete Score and Film Mix in 24-bit made me think that I could search and find the OST in the same quality.

This is a brilliant compilation!
Enjoy this score 😉
I watched a MAKING OF the score and I do not believe there were synth textures. The composer manipulated voices and the sound of a piano being struck- deleted the strike and using just the notes ‘decay’ into an eerie tape loop. The strannge ‘whale like sound’ is actually a man singing notes…

I must have misused the "synth textures" expression. You know, English isn’t my first language, so I might do wrong choice of words to express my ideas! Thanks for pointing that out 🙂
I simply meant the overall use of synth that is "atmospheric" in many scenes.

Bart Ass was banned for breaking forum rules.
I know that. He posted links to forbidden material and after he was first banned he made numerous double accounts.
But that doesn’t explain why his OST thread has been deleted, since the label that released it isn’t in the no-no list.
not even giving any HTTP error. I will try JDownloader 2.
Btw, there is a vinyl of On the Nature of Daylight, which contains 2 different versions of this song. (which I posted here in first day it released and yet there are no suppliers, sadly)

and the OST’s vinyl, look at the end, it contains an additional track (On the Nature of Daylight) as 21st than the CD version which we have here.
I wonder how different your version is than the vinyl versions?

Yes it’s an actual recording and the recording (s) were, as you said manipulated, but most importantly; they were sampled (recording of individual notes at different volume, intensity etc), which is how he created this piece. He made a or multiple sample instruments of his recordings which he then put together in various ways
not even giving any HTTP error. I will try JDownloader 2.

and the OST’s vinyl, look at the end, it contains an additional track (On the Nature of Daylight) as 21st than the CD version which we have here.
I wonder how different your version is than the vinyl versions?

EDIT: Spoke to soon, I scanned the JDownloader2_Clean_Installer setup .exe on Virustotal before executing it and it found few malware. I deleted the file.
See virus scan here: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/08b9f7a334e2ae3e804350d779f75331cb7d9be737bc0f7f85 126ef2e4ba1400/analysis/1502134774/
EDIT2: Mediafire worked now!
As for that JDownloader 2 thing, I don’t know what to say… Maybe you took it from an unofficial website. I took it from here (http://jdownloader.org/download/index). I really hope it’s without malware, because I’ve been using it for months now…
I’m glad you managed to download the files now 🙂
As for those versions of "On the Nature of Daylight", the only thing I can say is that I’m very very interested into these versions… The only one I know of is the one released in "The Blue Notebook" album, but I haven’t checked if it’s the same version used for "Arrival". Actually I haven’t even checked if, besides the obvious edits, the two versions that I ripped from the Blu-Ray are the same.
If anyone has those versions or can provide a rip of them that would be great!
Oh, and it would be great to have the other source cue (Serenade in E Major, Op. 22, B. 52: IV Larghetto) in its full version.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I didn’t expect so many people to come here and get it 😀
I was considering to do the Film Mix in 24-bit, but I had already done most of the cues. And right now, I’ve already deleted the Blu-Ray audio rip from my computer and the Blu-Ray rip itself. I still have a copy on another computer, but I don’t have any more space for it.
I can surely update the Film Mix in 24-bit, but only when there’ll be some requests! 😀
Thanks for the kind words anyway, HunterTech 🙂
Thank you
I ripped again the audio channels of the Blu-Ray, in 24-bit FLAC this time, so that I can start working on a 24-bit upgrade of the Film Mix 😀
It will take some time, because tomorrow I’m going on vacation for two weeks… but there’s no Internet there!

Yes it would be great if we get the Film Mix in original bluray quality sound. That is from "DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit)" source right?
Why is this at all necessary? How would this be at all possible? The "original bluray quality sound" is useless to have when it’s downfolded to your stereo device.
i didnt mean the surround channels as the clean track is only available at rear channels as OP said. so yeah having stereo 24-bit/48kHz would be nice after all.
Yes, it is. I downloaded the film from here: https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5369498

Of course, the 24-bit upgrade would be only stereo. Consider that more than 19 tracks out of 26 of the Film Mix are directly sourced either from untouched or slightly edited cues of the 24-bit Complete Score, and that’s not surround. Only 5 cues were entirely ripped from the Blu-Ray and 2 cues feature small inserts from Blu-Ray audio. The surround thing isn’t possible at all.
This score is not for everyone.
But even more I’d like to say thank you for keeping a link to the original "complete score" (which basically is the film mix) alive. I had it since Bart Oss shared it, but keeping it available is important nonetheless, just because the film mix is so vastly different to the official album. In places it sounds way better and fuller than the album. Hard to decide between the two, so I don’t. 😉
Have a nice vacation!
Now I did redo the edits and re-ripped the Blu-Ray audio in 24-bit to present the Film Mix in FLAC 24-bit. It’d gonna take some time because I don’t know how wheter to keep or not some bonus cues and I’ll have to re-upload everything. In a few days it will be online 😀
Thanks for keeping the thread alive!
I had to remake from scratch the rip of the Blu-Ray stems, all the editing, etc.
I did most of that in some days, but I quickly got sick of the project as I was getting more addicted to Game of Thrones. I also did stuck on a few variations of the source cues (1m01s, 6m02s, 1m01sreuse) but I eventually managed to start to finish what I wanted to do as soon as I finished Season 7 yesterday
Well, a bit late, but enjoy nonetheless 😀
I’m glad you like it! 😀
I agree. Maybe it’s not quite "sound design" (which would mean it’s mostly synths) as much as minimalistic and atmospheric at the same time. Yes, some parts are basically "sound design" but there’s also vocals and strings. It indeed worked very well in the film 🙂
Out of curiosity – what audiotracks do you have on your bluray? And which one did you use? Just wondering since my bluray doesn’t start with the same studio logos at all and the default audiostream is the english 7.1 DTS HDMA, but there’s also the german and spanish 5.1 DTS HDMA. It might produce even cleaner tracks if one were to use a combination of all 3…

Hey, Calidoran!
I don’t own the Blu-Ray myself (I still use DVDs…). I downloaded the high-quality Blu-Ray rip from here: https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5369498
I ripped the English audio stems with Audacity, saved them in 24-bit FLAC and then I proceeded with editing and mixing, always with Audacity.
You may check the breakdown I posted in the main post to see which cues feature audio sections from the Blu-Ray 🙂

I’ll check the other two DTS HDMA streams on my bluray to see if there is less speech and sfx on those.
Anyway, one helluva movie, even if the message gets obvious after a while. The aspect of time as non-linear is fascinating…

Actually, the source is 16/48. At least on my bluray.
AUDIO:
Codec Language Bitrate Description
—– ——– ——- ———–
DTS-HD Master Audio English 0 kbps 7.1 / 48 kHz / 16-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 16-bit)
DTS-HD Master Audio German 0 kbps 5.1 / 48 kHz / 16-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 16-bit)
Dolby Digital Audio Russian 640 kbps 5.1 / 48 kHz / 640 kbps
DTS-HD Master Audio Spanish 0 kbps 5.1 / 48 kHz / 16-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 16-bit)
Don’t read anything negative (or positive) into that. Just stating a fact 🙂
Get the program BD-info, put your disc into your player, click view report and show me the result. Or… You could start up EAC3TO and let it do its magic:
But then you would perhaps rather go by internet hearsay? Show me your results and we might have two different releases, but do NOT link to anything and accept it for a fact.

As I stated previously, I don’t own the Blu-Ray. I took it from here: https://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5369498
It’s a Blu-Ray rip which contains the Russian (4 different versions), Ukrainian and English languages.
For the latter it says:
DTS-HD Master Audio / 7.1 / 48 kHz / 4200 kbps / 24-bit (DTS Core: 5.1 / 48 kHz / 1509 kbps / 24-bit) |original|
Thus I proceeded with the 24-bit version.
I honestly am not an expert at all in this kind of matter. Barely a starter.
And since you said it was 16-bit in your Blu-Ray, I hope that I took a version with real 24-bit channels…

Agree on that! I hope Villeneuve will make an equally great movie with Blade Runner 2049…
I don’t feel this score works as a stand alone musical experience…much like the original Andromeda Strain was so dynamic in Robert Wise’s film but something you really can not curl up with for a relaxing listen. Arrival’s music- which is indeed an atmospheric soundscape, something not limited to electronics, was created with repetitive small chorus and a single voice layered and altered as well as a traditional orchestra… with the added elegiac music at the beginning and end by a different composer altogether. It is a great score for a deeply moving and different film that is also controversial: i.e. some don’t get it, some think it is boring. It is a challenging experience on many levels. But the ‘music’ without the film doesn’t go anywhere.
Totally understandable.
But actually… I did fall in love with the score as soon as I listened to it. Which was waaaay before I had a chance to watch the film itself. So, I think some can still appreciate the listening experience, especially now that I ripped the source cues (which offer some welcome variation to Jhannsson’s music).
It’s inaccurate to use the term "stems" here – this is final, mixed-down audio. The term "stem" applies to the separated audio element; what you’re using is just the audio channels.
Thanks for the correction 🙂 As I said, I’m barely a beginner

Then something is off with your copy. blu-ray.com is not a hearsay and you can pretty much take the information on that website granted. I just looked at it in PowerDVD on my PC (not notebook which I could use EAC3TO as well) and yes it is what blu-ray.com says. SS is included in link below.
edit: to OP, you took the true source, so no worries.
My setup is: PowerDVD (decoder) (no effects) -> Xonar U7 (P’nP no DSP effects, only DAC) -> Creative G500 (all analog connected)
Output in PowerDVD tells you currently what type of audio is giving away by the software to the speakers. It is in raw (PCM) format as you can see because I’m using PowerDVD software decoding. So software itself decodes the DTSHDMA source and gives it to speakers.
Back then I was using SPDIF as playback device and output was telling compressed type of audio rather than PCM, which my external audio device was decoding the source. Software vs. hardware decoding does not matter at all as it is digital and even one bit error would make the sound inaudible. So it is all or nothing situation.
"AUDIO" refers to the audio source in file which (entering the software) PowerDVD is being fed, before decoding.
"OUTPUT" refers to the audio which (leaving the software) PowerDVD decoded and is putting out to my speakers to play back, and yes it is in native quality of what "AUDIO" tells you.
I will also include the EAC3TO log.

@Calidoran
It is, but this specific situation of yours looks like the core itself is also 16-bit.
here I made one last update to the thread: now I posted details for getting a 16-bit version of the Complete Score and I posted a link for the 24-bit version of the Official Release.
So, now we got everything both in 16 & 24-bit genuine FLAC! 😀
If I were you I’d start with the Film Mix (without the Bonus Tracks). Then, discover the remaining material if you enjoy the score from the Film Mix 🙂
