Yeah, it was here last night then disappeared. Plus the download failed. Really strange. I made a comment in the thread too and the comment is as if I never made it. Thread deleted I suppose?

Weird here is one of the downloaded tracks from that thread. Is it possible to trick Spectro? This seems very lossless to me. I just don’t know where the OP got the FLAC source.

The FLAC thread got deleted after less than a day I think, no one knows why. I’ve got the FLAC from that thread and tested some of the tracks and it appears to be legit. Weird…

You better check the horizontal axis on small segment too, not just the vertical axis. Lossy compression will make the horizontal axis look "blocky", but if the codec is good and the bitrate high enough, this can be subtle.
Different encoders can use different cut-off values and sometimes they even allow it to be parameterized, I wouldn’t rely solely on it.

Can’t we just use our ears? If it sounds good, what difference does it make?

Ears work too but unless the quality really sucks, I think it is generally spotted easier using spectral analysis. I know this is stupid (when I learned about it I did not believe a word of it and thought it was ridiculous), but it is true. It is difficult to tell high quality lossy encodes from lossless by the ear, when possible at all (you can do ABX tests if you want to be sure, but this depends on the sample used).
Lossless has other uses than direct listening, mainly: archival, clean transcoding to other formats.
