Muchsimas gracias! Me encanta!
Only took me 2 or 3 minutes into the opening scene. And it was downhill from there. I had some reservations going into it, based on the trailers… and I really wanted to like it. But I couldn’t succumb to its alleged charm… and I am a hopeless romantic. In so many ways… it felt like a student film, made by someone who A): claims Fame is there favorite movie and… B): who’s daddy had Hollywood connections. Also… C): made by someone who’s frame of references are other movies… not real-life experiences.
I don’t get what the public sees in it, nor the positive critical response… but it has obviously tapped into the zeitgeist. And while… I’d be the first person to shout this particular emperor has no clothes… I don’t fault those who have fallen under its spell. Clearly… it is something they needed… even if they didn’t know they wanted it.

Well damn….another who hated it. Let’s be friends, guys!
I actually loved the opening scene, for one thing and one thing only: the camera never cut once. It was one entire take. Either that or it was a million takes and the editor(s) now what he’s/they’re doing. There were a few other numbers where the camera never cut (again, it’s possible there were cuts and the editing is that superb). I also liked the costume design and the "choreography" (not sure if that’s the right word?) of the numbers. That’s about it.

Yeah… that opening scene was done in one take. But both Orson Welles (Touch of Evil) and Robert Altman (The Player) did it better.
I will say this though… I was impressed that RG and ES could sing well enough not to embarrass themselves. And impressed by the fact that RG was actually playing the piano… even if it wasn’t his performance we were hearing.
I usually use Photoshop. I’m not sure what others use. The images I usually get from Google image search (movie posters/promo material etc.), and the same goes for the logos (for example, search ‘la la land logo png’). The thing about cover making is that you improve very quickly compared to other artistic stuff, so just keep at it.
Okay, thank you for the advices. I will try Photoshop. And with time I will improve, at least I hope so, so soon I will make better covers. Thanks!
Best regards
Software: 99% of the time I utilize Pixelmator (http://www.pixelmator.com/mac/) (P-shop hasn’t been part of my workflow for almost a decade). In certain special circumstances, such as attaching text to a stroke, I use my old standby Fireworks (http://www.adobe.com/ca/products/fireworks.html), export as png, and then paste/insert them onto the canvas.
Key Art: Google, of course. Also, CineMaterial (https://www.cinematerial.com) has become a vital resource when Google fails to pull up adequate sizes, high quality versions or international posters, but it isn’t free.
Fonts: There are "billions and billions" of free fonts sites. Utilizing WhattheFont! or Matcherator can help identify a font from a graphic. But, quite frankly, in most cases the actual graphical text can be repurposed through layering and filters, because in any number of cases the key art calls for a custom font for which there is no freely available equivalent. Text generator site Fontmeme (http://fontmeme.com) has proven helpful/informative in the past.
For instance, "Original Motion…" is the only font based text on my cover. The "La La…" and composer credit are both primary graphic sources. Both P-Shop and Pixelmator provide various selection tools to adapt a graphic in whatever way you so see fit. And while I have several Helvetica variants I did not have this particular condensed version, so I had to go looking to acquire it.

Pixelmator is for Mac and I use Windows but I found on Google that Gimp is similar to Pixelmator, so I will try this Gimp and the Photoshop. Also thanks for the page of CineMaterial and Fontmeme. I will give them a try and I will see what I can do.
