The purgatory to which johann Nepomuk Hummel�s considerable oeuvre was condemned seems to be coming to an end at last, after nearly two centuries. As with many Austro – Hungarian musicians, the crushing shadow of Beethoven, then the inextinguishable confidences of Schubert,categorised thescores of this pianist-composer as�secondary�. Child prodigy � he began his career as an international virtuoso at the age of nine � and pupil of Mozart, universally famous as a concert pianist, he was an uncontested master in the Vienna shaken by the French Revolution, selected during the Congress of Vienna for the gala evenings.
