"Logan" score: Marco Beltrami to replace Cliff Martinez

The lasted last-minute composer replacement is for this year’s "Logan", originally set to be scored by Cliff Martinez, now being scored by Marco Beltrami.

I actually haven’t followed either of them, but I’ve heard Martinez’s score for "Drive": phenomenal. As for Beltrami, I’ve heard very few works from him, but I hardly enjoy or like his music. I think "I, Robot" was pretty nice to say the least.
Anyway, I was super-excited for Martinez’s work for "Logan", it would have been extremely different from the average superhero scores (as much as the films seems to be very different for the genre), and I thought he was just perfect. I know Beltrami scored the previous film (from the same director of "Logan"), and I think this is a positive element.

What do you think?

EDIT: Film Music Reporter (http://filmmusicreporter.com/2016/12/31/marco-beltrami-to-score-james-mangolds-logan/) says that it’s uknown if any of Martinez’s work will appear in the film.

I can give or take Beltrami. He did a decent job with The Wolverine and World War Z. But some of his other scores have been "meh" at best. If he reuses his themes from The Wolverine, Logan could have a decent score (the central theme for Logan was pretty good). My excitement for this score is lessened somewhat. It seems like this really different superhero film will end up having an utterly generic superhero score.

Beltrami scored Mangold’s 3:10 to Yuma & Wolverine so perhaps it’s a case of the director knowing the composer.

I don’t like Martinez’s music at all, so I’m glad Beltrami is coming back!
Even though his score for The Wolverine wasn’t very good, he’s still a very talented composer.
Just listen to Hellboy, The Seventh Son, Gods of Egypt or A Good Day to Die Hard.

All scores/films I haven’t listened/watched. I saw only the ending of the Gods of Egypt (such a ridicolous film) but the score looked nice. I should give it a listen.
My main issue with Beltrami is that (I think) his score wouldn’t be as fresh and different as it would be Martinez’s score, like him or not. A fully synth score is still unheard of in the recent era of superhero franchises.

Beltrami is one of the best.

He could be, since I’ve listened so little of his music. But he doesn’t fit my musical tastes as much as Martinez. To me, Cliff is one of the best 😉

I get what you’re saying, and I agree.
A superhero score from Martinez would probably sound very unique, but I’d rather have something familiar that I’m gonna enjoy for sure 🙂

I’ve just re-watched the film, and after a few separate listenings, I enjoyed the score and movie more than I would expected at second view. Though, I found the plot and especially the characters very unsatisfactory.

Beltrami is hit and miss, but i like that he’s coming back. I do prefer when sequels bring back composers, and more importantly, earlier themes. It makes the whole journey that much more impactful.

The small excitement I had for the score and film just dropped significantly. Beltrami has always been "meh" to me once he pursued genres outside of horror.

I’ve recently listened to the Complete Score of Beltrami’s "The Wolverine". Strangely enough, it had a different touch and style than the ‘usual’ and kinda ‘meh’ Beltrami. I’m not saying it was a blast to me, but it surely was different (to my untrained ears it sounded a little more like JNH). Maybe he’ll remain on the same path for "Logan".

I completely agree. I actually really liked Brian Tyler’s score for Thor TDW, but I’d rather they had brought back Patrick Doyle. I like to see and hear themes reappear and evolve. Hence i was very sad that JNH didn’t come back again for TDKR. At least some of his themes were featured.

I’ve read somewhere (I couldn’t tell you where, small chance it isn’t even true) that Tyler DID want Doyle’s themes in the film, but the producers weren’t so keen. Apparently he snuck a few Easter eggs in regardless.

As far as I’m concerned thematic continuity is always good. If that’s true i’m disappointed… :/

I hope that Silvestri will make a great job for the Infinity War movies. I don’t really care that much for the movies themselves, but I care more for the music at this point.

Beltrami is certainly in his element here, given the western setting.

As for the preview for the score: it really takes the same feeling of "The Wolverine", I think it will work fine. Oh, and in the video there’s a quick look at a list of the sessions tracks. Unfortunately, it’s too fast to read titles or slates.

Eventually, I loved Logan, both the movie itself and I have to say, Beltrami’s score as well. Easily my favourite score of the year, a huge surprise for me! Considering that before Logan, my consideration of Beltrami were extremely low.

Also, I think that Martinez wouldn’t fit in this movie. They’re on different waves.
