THE GIFT OF LOVE – rare 1958 soundtrack – Newman, Mockridge, Fain-Webster, Vic Damone

“The Gift of Love” is a 1958 CinemaScope remake of the 1946 tear jerker classic, “Sentimental Journey”. The film’s music was a genuine hodgepodge of old and new. The score for the 1946 film, composed by Cyril Mockridge with unaccredited contributions by Alfred Newman, was recycled for the remake with more lush orchestrations plus additional music (also unaccredited) by Hugo Friedhofer, Leigh Harline & Ralph Blane. As was the custom in the 1950s, a new title song written by Sammy Fain & Paul Francis Webster, “The Gift of Love”, was sung by Vic Damone over the film’s credits and by the chorus at the film’s conclusion. A soundtrack album was released by Columbia Records in monaural only. It was rumored in the 1990s that the original 3 track magnetic stems of the score were found to be severely damaged, suffering from “mag wow” and therefore unusable for a stereo remastering. This download was DSD archived in 2004 from an original CBS pressing in fair condition of the monaural soundtrack album and features about 40 minutes of music. The sound is rather compressed and the additional reverb added made the rich Fox soundstage sonics a little shrill but this has been minimized as much as possible. Don’t expect any miracles but even in compromised sound, although not a great score by any means despite the star studded composers involved, “The Gift of Love” is a very rare soundtrack album definitely worth a listen.
