Recorded in 1992 and 1993, Harmonia Mundi’s double-disc album of the complete nocturnes of Fr�d�ric Chopin is a first-rate offering, for these quintessential Romantic character pieces are gloriously interpreted by pianist Brigitte Engerer. For elegance of conception, clarity of technique, and purity of expression, Engerer’s playing can scarcely be surpassed, only matched. Because the nocturnes rely so strongly on their sinuous, unfolding melodies, a performer’s ability to make them float above the accompaniment is critical. Engerer sustains the effect of bel canto vocalization as she executes all the ornaments with the nuances of a sung line, and suspends the melodies with careful use of rubato, phrasing, and dynamics. The overall feeling of her playing is smooth and balanced, and there is never a moment where one note is overemphasized or where her touch seems forced. Because these nocturnes have been reissued on several occasions, the label obviously regards them as classics that should stay available, and anyone who has appreciated this fine set will gladly concur. Harmonia Mundi’s recording is clear yet moderately resonant, so Engerer’s playing is set off brilliantly, like diamonds on black velvet. (AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson )
