AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD (Preisner, 1991) SCORE ONLY EDIT

Spurred by Petros, I am going to try and be a bit more active sharing things in this forum. I will have a greater rarity soon, but first I wanted to share my work on this lovely Preisner score. I know it was shared here almost half a year ago, but this is a unique edit.

This is a rip from my own CD which I bought used about a year ago. I was so excited to hear a rare Preisner score I had never before heard, though I had heard of the acclaimed film. But when I put the CD in, I had a most unpleasant experience: the beautiful quiet contemplation and simple power of Preisner’s music was regularly interrupted by noisy unrelated music and even sound effects! It completely ruined the flow of his orchestral composition. So I decided to edit it out as much as possible. Here’s the original tracklisting for comparison with mine if you are curious. It is almost 20 minutes shorter after I got rid of as much non-score as I could:

Now, don’t get your hopes up completely — the way the album was produced, sometimes score will fade into source music and back to score in the same track. Sometimes there will be bird calls or other minor sound effects. I am not a talented enough editor to fix things like that, if it’s even possible when there is score overlapping with source. BUT I have made what I consider a much more pleasant and listenable album. Every source music track that was on its own is removed, and where possible, if there was source music that could be removed without disrupting the score in a track too much, I removed that too. The best example is Amazon Beginnings, which ends abruptly with a bird call, but at least doesn’t have the source music that makes up the rest of the track! But compare with the track Legends which has annoying sound effects, source music, and even dialogue mixing in and out with the original score. There was just nothing I could do with that unless it was to lose the track entirely, which I didn’t want since there was some lovely Priesner music.

About the file format: It is 256 AAC, because I use iTunes match. I edited and imported the score in lossless, but then I am afraid I deleted the lossless version after it uploaded to the Cloud (and got rid of the CD because I could never listen to its program). Apple converts lossless uploads to AAC, but I think it still sounds pretty wonderful, and the previous share on this forum was 320 MP3 so this might possibly sound better. Artwork included on the music files, in the highest quality of the cover I could find online:

Enjoy, and let me know if it improves the music’s flow for you!

Next up, a beautiful super rarity from a composer you’ve probably never heard of before: Sheldon Mirowitz’s Evolution (the documentary, not the comedy score by John Powell). I got it as a rare promo many years ago, and since I kept the CD this one I will be able to share in lossless.

Thanks Petros, I am glad you like it and it feels good to share unique stuff! In future I will try to concentrate on things which have never been shared before, but the original album of this just drove me crazy to the point that I would never listen to it. I figured I probably wasn’t the only one. Now I can stand it, even though it would be great to one day get a true score-only release.

Thanks for giving some feedback on it! I’m glad you agree. For those who are curious to compare with the original complete album, THOMAS TALLIS was kind enough to upload it some months back here:
