Hey there! Today I present to you a score I’m happy with for a change 😉 I did Silvestri’s Captain America a few weeks ago in an attempt to make me like it. Just like I did with Indy 4 or other scores. To do this, I took the sessions (lossless) and turned them into one of my releases. This Deluxe Edition is not that much longer than the OST. Some tracks here and there are longer, contain less micro edits, are combined differently but other than that the difference in the amount of music is not that big. The difference is in the sound, chronological order and the cover.
Now don’t get me wrong: the OST has never sounded bad! But I always felt it lacked crispness and that dynamics and stage sounded a tad odd. Oh, before I forget it, just two small questions: why is it that British recording venues tend to produce a somewhat muffled sound? This was recorded by Dennis Sands (marvellous engineer), an American, but it somehow lacked finesse. And who mastered it? I cannot find that information anywhere. Blabla, anyway, I managed to increased crispness. There is less deep bass now but more upper bass (I also thought it lacked punch). Also gone are the strange dynamics (which seem to have been achieved with automated limiting for the OST), I achieved the same level of dynamic compression with different, less audible means (albeit more work). Another curious thing was the slight amount of distortion to be found on the OST, on this set it is absent.
What took me the longest was combining small tracks into bigger suites. For the most part, I repeated the combinations of the OST but at the same time I expanded them, using more tracks. I also managed to improve some of them slightly. On the other hand, I also created one clearly audible transition, sorry, but I wasn’t able to do it differently. Regarding the amount of music: I erased the second version of the "Captain America March" (aka "End Credits"), otherwise I kept everything and added the song "Star Spangled Man" from my OST CD. Oh yes, the song! Actually, one of the reasons to do the whole Edition was to remaster the song. Because I fuckin’ love it, it’s a brilliant peace of faux-broadway musical! In the end, the difference is subtle. It’s one of the few instances where I added something: reverb. Very little, very subtle, tastefully done.
Something else I did for the whole score (which I rarely do): I de-noised it. Equally subtle and tasteful. Well, on the whole I enjoy the sound a lot these days. The chronological order helps as well. So, have fun 🙂
Oh, wait! The cover. Yeah, I wanted to do something extremely patriotic, something completely overdone. So I added the American flag everywhere. Not that it was necessary, its colours are already included in Cap’s suit. But it was a lot of fun doing the covers, even though it took me almost two weeks to do them.
But now: have fun 🙂
P.S.: who asked about X-Men III throughout all those years? Those who did, please write to me 🙂

A SUGGESTION: Use JDownloader instead of a browser to download this. That way, you can circumvent ads and potentially dangerous stuff.
A WARNING: Once the links expire, I wont upload it again, someone else has to do that (maybe by creating mirrors?)
Thank You So Much!
I did the patriotic cover thinking about you, btw 😉
With an equalizer. Naturally with a finalized mix like this one I can only alter the impression of orchestra parts, not change them. Within limits, I can influence the gain of information mixed to the center (monaural) and the width of the whole stereo field. Combined with an EQ I can either try to make it all balanced (or flat) so that it will play well anywhere or – like in this case – create a little character I would like to call the "Tomlinson-curve".
The main difference to other engineers is that I mainly use an EQ to influence an existing mix by an amount other engineers seem to be incapable of. Someone else called it "harmonic rebalancing" which is an expression that fits well, I think. These days, many producers / engineers love to re-mix everything. In some cases it actually solves problems (as seen on Basic Instinct) but in other cases it creates new ones (countless other releases). So I personally think that a re-mix is in theory a good thing but in practice the opposite. I’d rather have them use an EQ to repair frequency related errors.
Another thing: I trust my ears – but not enough. I need visual feedback alongside my hearing. Mono-compatibility? Check. Correct stereo width? Check. Phase distortions? Check. No inter-sample clipping? Check.
Crap, an answer that was too long. Sorry.
Question: was this the score you mentioned working on in the Da Vinci thread? Or is it something else?
Nice to see you back in full force, sir. I’ve been meaning to talk to you again.

I worked on many score during the last two months. Some will be released here, others won’t be (because they’re Varese) 😉
And you can talk to me anytime 🙂
Of course. You do too much for us.

Was it gonna be on Soundtrack Jungle? Are you even still on that place?
And you can talk to me anytime 🙂
Hey man, you’ve made for the best conversations, even if things aren’t exactly the best.
I assume. I know nothing of it, other than it likes to be very private, so a lot of the time, nobody new is allowed in. Only when nothing new is happening is when they get in new members. That’s what SA has told me.
He he, not quite. Mainly, I work for myself 😉

Yes.

Why aren’t things exactly the best?

Well, it’s a bit more complex than that. The Jungle doesn’t have as many members as the Shrine. Far from it actually. But with such a small amount of people, they tend to know each other personally. And that’s a good thing, I think.
No, I’m sorry, I don’t know about the best time to be invited.
Isn’t that always the reason? The appreciation in your craft and interests always take suit.
Why aren’t things exactly the best?
I’m not sure. Maybe when life gets complicated or the subjects we discuss being heavy somewhat. I wasn’t thinking when I put that in.

I always love being in a community like that. The small circle of users I’m in on the GD, though not always in the best situations, always make for good conversation.
Thank you so much for this!
I just wasn’t sure if there was something you wanted to talk about. I always worry when someone starts to talk about his problems, I then want to help 🙂

Thank you Sonic. I like this score but it is not one of my favorite Silvestri scores. It is, however, one of my favorite superhero themes and the best theme of all the MCU movies.
True, Silvestri has written better action scores in the past, the auto-pilot argument has some merit when it comes to this one and – even more so – ‘The Avengers’.
Ha! Here’s for hoping!
I never really warmed to Silvestri, but I do like the now trademark brass used for Captain America in this and The Avengers, so I’ll definitely give this a spin.
Thanks Sonic!
Do you have any plans to do a Deluxe Edition of The Avengers ?
I greatly appreciate your hard work. 🙂
That is me as well. Too keen on getting in other people’s business. I’ve gotten crap for it before.
GD? Is it something I know?
General Discussion. You’re the second person that has been confused by this abbreviation. I probably should just leave it in full from now on. It’s too vague.
Nope 😉
But then I didn’t have plans for many of the other scores I recently did. So I should perhaps say that I don’t know 🙂

I know. Not everyone likes it when other people attempt to solve other people’s problems and issues. And to be frank… not every problem can be solved.

You can use this abbreviation – if you make clear that it’s the same forum. I assumed it was a different forum alltogether. The concept of mentioning a certain room as special feels strange to me (just because I don’t experience it like this). For the simple reason that the members of General Discussion are members here, too. Just like they are anywhere else on this forum. So… no stress 🙂
You did one wonderful work!
You did one wonderful work!
Thanks, I had hoped to introduce people to music they have never listened to 🙂
To all the others I want to express how grateful I am for all the "Thank yous". So, thank YOU!

Seems to be a setup file for a Mac. Try to download it using JDownloader, it’s much safer compared to web-based downloads, especially with Mirrorcreator.

Get rid of that immediately. You must have clicked the wrong button somewhere. The correct filename would be:
3.Day.Vacation.Of.Grandpa.Rogers.rar
As Sonic says, it seems to be a setup-file so do NOT use it

Anyways, can’t wait to dig in here, thanks again!
PS, what’s with those little shields outside Silvestri’s name on that 4th "DE" cover version? haha.

I just saw that this thread has a rating of 3 stars. And now I’m curious: why? Can those people who gave it 1 star say why they voted that way? I need that feedback in order to improve future releases.
So, ignorant question. Where does one do that anyway? I never knew you could rate a post, other than just giving the author a reputation point.
Thank you so much, SonicAdventure!
Anyways, can’t wait to dig in here, thanks again!
Well, I think that the complete score plays like the OST. It won’t get rid of the scores problems (the ones you mentioned) but at least my version sounds better. And it caused me to re-appreciate the score, I like it now. But I’m not sure about others.
The alternates were included because many people actually love them, for whatever reason. For my personal listening pleasure on a smartphone or DAP I erase them. But here in the future I will try to include them so that people can choose.
PS, what’s with those little shields outside Silvestri’s name on that 4th "DE" cover version? haha.
Aren’t they great? So completely overdone and tacky!

At the top of the whole thread you can find four links, one of them is called ‘Rate this thread’. That’s it.
Don’t know if is there a mix with those 3 songs, or anything like that.
Look everywhere, never found it.
Please, send me work links.

It’s too tiresome to check the post closest to where you requested a re-up first?
And yeah, what is up with these British recording venues? They make the music sound as if it were captured with a cloth draped over the mic.
Looking at you Bloodborne and Halo 5.
