NOTE: This album is a rare case where I hardly photographed it in any way.
Due to these circumstances, I had to use a photo from an auction of this album.

Description

In 1997, VAP released their Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works series. Mostly known by their secondary title, the Film Composer Selection series, it consists of six volumes overall. Each volume is dedicated to Ifukube’s music from films produced by a certain studio, with the exception of the sixth volume, which is music to a shadow puppet play by artist Seiji Fujishiro. While I do have them all, I will not be able to upload the first and last volumes here (or PM) at this time.

The following are the volumes in the series:

Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Daiei Edition: Zatoichi Series/Sleepy Eyes of Death Series (VPCD-81186)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Shochiku Edition: The Last Samurai (VPCD-81187)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Toei Edition: Shinran/Thirteen Assassins (VPCD-81188)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Nikkatsu Edition: The Burmese Harp/Scoundrels of the Sea (VPCD-81189)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Iwanami Films Edition: Sakuma Dam Trilogy (VPCD-81190)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Seiji Fujishiro Shadow Puppet Play: The Humpbacked Pony (VPCD-81191)

Secondary Titles:

Film Composer Selection Daiei (VPCD-81186)
Film Composer Selection Shochiku (VPCD-81187)
Film Composer Selection Toei (VPCD-81188)
Film Composer Selection Nikkatsu (VPCD-81189)
Film Composer Selection Iwanami Films (VPCD-81190)
Film Composer Selection Seiji Fujishiro Shadow Puppet Play (VPCD-81191)

This is the second volume, Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Shochiku Edition: The Last Samurai, or Film Composer Selection Shochiku. As the name suggests, this volume covers music Akira Ifukube composed for Shochiku produced films. The album features the score to "The Last Samurai" (1974). It also features selected cues from "The Woman Running on the Shore" (1964), "The Woman in the Typhoon Belt" (1948), "Free School" (1951) and "Crazy Uproar" (1950). In all, this release contains music from five films. All music is in mono. Released on March 1, 1997.

By the way, track 43, which is my favorite track, is absolutely beautiful, especially the last third of it.

Scans

Unfortunately, I am unable to provide scans of this album at this time. Sorry.

Links

I made a link to MP3 rips at the Godzilla Scores (Sharebee) thread here on the forums long ago. I thought that not only should there be fresh rips, this album should get its own thread as well. There are two links for you to choose from, both are uncompressed RAR files. The first link is for the version in WAV, and the other is for the MP3 version. These are fresh rips that I made today. As I said above, included with the links is a simple PDF of both track lists.

The links are no longer available. Please do not request the links. All requests will be ignored.

Final Remarks

I hope that you will enjoy this album full of obscure Ifukube goodness. If you encounter any issues, please let me know. Enjoy this great release.

Thanks very much! And thanks for the lossless!

You’re welcome! Not only did I choose an uncompressed lossless format to preserve the album, I also made sure that the RAR files remained uncompressed as well.

Dumb question here… are these just the music tracks or are they music and effects?

Dumb question here… are these just the music tracks or are they music and effects?

Actually, that’s a good question. I’m positive VAP used the master tapes for everything here except for "The Woman in the Typhoon Belt" (1948), "Free School" (1951) and "Crazy Uproar" (1950). Those were taken from the films’ audio, since those recordings are most likely lost.

Thank you very much, Brandon, for sharing theses largely unknown Ifukube works! I am not too familiar with Ifukube, and I’ve almost exclusively heard his Godzilla scores, so it’s a tremendous pleasure to acquaint myself with more of his work 🙂

You’re welcome! I’m happy to introduce people into Ifukube’s music, especially his more obscure stuff. I plan to get the Toei volume ripped and uploaded some time next week, so keep a look out for it!
