I think it is pretty average, sadly… it certainly has that classic Williams sound and orchestration, but there are no distinguishable or memorable themes and there’s little flow to the music. I can’t imagine many people coming out of the cinema humming any theme tune from The BFG the way they used to with Star Wars, Indy Jones or Superman, to name but a few…

That surprised me too actually, the absence of comments.
I’m taking a few days more to properly listen to it, but I confirm what you just said. I usually fall in love to every JW score I hear for the first time except a rare few, and unfortunately this one is one of them so far. Time will tell.

Apart from a handful cues in his whole career Williams never has really connected sonically with me. Yes he is ‘the master’ and he has some good iconic themes and his scores work wonderfull in the movies but as a standalone listening experience much of his scores never ‘aroused’ me. This one is no exception. Certainly not one of his bests.

Thanks for your feedback on the score! I must confess I have been a big fan of Williams throughout my life, enjoying most of his output from the 70’s through to the 90’s, including his underscore cues. But since then (minus the odd exception like Harry Potter 1, which was more than 15 years ago now), it seems like he has just run out of music and writes only supportive underscore without any flair or melodic themes. For all the praise that people were lavishing onto his Force Awakens score, I personally found it to be dull and without any developed or satisfying motifs that were the calling card of his scores for the OT. Even his prequel scores had some standout cues, even though overall his prequel scores were another example of him being past his prime.

I do hope we get at least one more great Williams score before he leaves us, and would like to see how he develops his cues from TFA into Episode 8… but overall these days I just have minimal excitement for a John Williams score.
