(1989–2016)

Anton Yelchin, who was best known for playing Chekov in the new Star Trek films, has been killed by his own car at his home in Los Angeles, police say.

It struck him after rolling backwards down the steep drive at his Studio City home, pinning him against a brick postbox pillar and a security fence.

He died shortly after 01:00 (08:00 GMT) on Sunday.

JJ Abrams, who directed Yelchin in the first two Star Trek films, paid tribute on Twitter saying he was "brilliant".

"You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you," he wrote.

Yelchin played Pavel Chekov, the role originally made famous by Walter Koenig, in the rebooted Star Trek films released in 2009 and 2013.

He reprised the role in a third film, Star Trek Beyond, which is due for release next month.

Bad news, I was really shocked when I read the news today, couldn’t believe it. Such a banal and unnecessary accident, taking away such a promising young actor, whose funny and kind soul was one of a kind. His take on the Chekov character was unique and playful, he will be remembered by trekdom forever.

My condolences to his parents and all people who were near to him.

Ugh. Not even younger people can escape the Celebrity Death Toll of 2016. I wouldn’t be surprised if nearly everyone in Hollywood would be dead by the end of the year. How depressing..

I really really liked him. Such a great young actor. Never got into trouble, stayed out of the tabloids, was never in the media. Just an all around great guy. It’s so sad. At least Bowie, Alan Rickman and Prince had lived to be much older. Not saying that it’s justified, it’s just so tragic losing him at only 27. I’ll miss him :'(

So it has come out that this was a senseless accident thanks to yet another faulty piece of shit car.
His family should sue the car manufacturer out of existence! http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/mad/mad0190.gif
