Note: I discovered this little gem of a score purely by accident, like the film. After anticipating the recent movie also titled The Boy, I thought I was finally getting to sit down to watch it. There were a few things that had me questioning the movie I was watching because a.) the subject matter is wayyyyy too dark for a PG-13 film, b.) there was no doll (a scene in this film with a box which I thought was going to be the doll turned out to be something else even darker) and c.) the score didn’t match anything I had heard on Bear McCreary’s album.

By the end I quickly figured out I wasn’t watching the right film, but despite that I enjoyed it. It was edgy, dark and one of those dangerous films that you see once in a blue moon. The score plays a huge part in my enjoyment of the film and I immediately went looking for it once the film ended.

I seem to have a thing for German composers and German composer Hauschka is another one on the list. His score is minimal and atonal which provides the proper eerie tone that the film seeks to convey. It’s not every day listening, but it is listening for when you want to evoke a nice eerie mood for whatever your occasion may be.

I recommend checking out the film; it’s fairly easy to find if you know where to look. 😉 It’s a little surprising because there’s a lot of mood but little suspense, however despite that I think the film works. It kept me hooked to find out how this was going to play out. I was pretty satisfied by the end.

Anyway, enjoy this neat little find!

Bonus note: Elijah Wood produced this film.

I’ve been trying to draw a connection between other films and the only film that immediately comes to mind is The Good Son from 1993, which ironically stars Elijah Wood. It’s the only connection I can draw but the stories, tone, everything is a little more ominous and dark here.
