I’ve been listening to this from beginning to end, and I’m in heaven. It’s a dream come true to finally have this terrific score. (Not to mention all the other Gerald Fried music now available here). Having watched ROOTS (both series) a number of times, I’m familiar with every note of music, and being able to hear it at last is such a thrill. This may be my favourite Fried music, ever. I love the way he takes us on a musical journey, starting with the familiar style of music we know from the first series, then gradually evolving the score to encompass the changing times, adding a more contemporary jazzy vibe (there’s even some exciting car chase music in Episode 5, track 15), giving us a Big Band sound for the 1940s scenes, and finally coming full circle with authentic African music for the last episode. I love the cue that underscores James Earl Jones breaking down as he finally meets someone from Kunta Kinte’s village (Episode 7, track 36.) That cue always slays me. And then in the following cue we’re treated to one of the most rousing versions of the Roots theme, with a contemporary edge. Just glorious.

Thanks again to sadsack for taking the time and effort to upload these, and to his contact for generously allowing this music to live and breathe… and many, many thanks to Mr Fried for writing so much great music.
