Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard – The Dark Knight (Complete / Film Mix / Lossless)

Here she is. Finally. After 6 long months.
When I started this project back in November, I had no idea the amount of time it would take me to pull it off, nor the amount of detail I’d need to put into it. It was a struggle, it was painstaking, it was time consuming – but it was well worth it.
This is one of my favorite film scores of all time.
Having it in it’s complete form as heard in the film – is something I will never take for granted.

Now that I got the overview out of the way, let’s get down to how this was pulled off.

TheSkeletonMan939: without him, this edit simply would not have been possible.
For all of the cues that were different in the film vs the raw versions, he stepped up by ripping the Blu-ray and using his audio-editing wizardry magic.
I can’t give an exact percentage, but he did a nice chunk.

Tylerakasyn: for anything that Skelly was not able to achieve, I turned to another audio wizard who knows this score for well. He was able to create entire cues that were necessary to achieve a 100% accurate film mix.

And lastly, there’s one other person who helped with 1 cue, but requested to ramain anonymous.
You know who you are, and even if it was only 1 cue, it’s exactly what I needed.

All 3 of you have been an integral part of this project and I cannot thank you enough.

Now for the source.
All 58 cues present here are in 16-bit, 44.1kHz ALAC.
While the raw cues are in FLAC and that’s what I used to edit, I don’t post in FLAC anymore since it’s a waste for me. I’m an Apple user, hence ALAC is the way to go.
Not gonna upload FLAC just for other people.
Sorry, I’m not that nice :p

And lastly, the cover: as per usual, Jasonjhn8 designed this never-before seen image specifically for this set.
I wanted an image that was yet to be used. So I searched the deepest bowels of the internet to make sure nobody had used it.
And from what I could find, they hadn’t. Several alternates are included in the archive.
However, this one takes the cake.
I’m very happy with how it turned out – he is a talented artist.

I really hope everyone enjoys this as much as I enjoyed working on it.
This is my final film mix that I am publicly posting.
It brings me great joy to finally be able to share my magnum opus with you all.

It’s because those tracks have characters (?) and Windows always does this. You need to use something specific to open the archive, though I forget what. Sorry I can’t be of any further help.

This is also one of my favorite scores ever, the contrast between the styles of Zimmer and Howard are magnificent and work together for the movie brilliantly.

I’ve often tried to do my own version trying to replicate the film mix, however not successfully. So when I saw this I was almost in tears, I cannot wait to hear, especially when it’s from you DAK 😀

EDIT: also wanted to say that I’m a big fan of keeping the slates in place and that you crossfade all the tracks (keep all the original track titles, instead of lumping multiple cues into one track i.e. something like "Eye for an Eye /Dent Defeated / I’m not a Hero / A Dark Night"). The little details.

Um, wow. When you said it took you six months to complete this, I was shocked. How could it take so long to mix a score like this? After listening: holy shit. It’s a miracle this didn’t take over a year. The crossfades are so meticulous and true to the film, it’s astonishing. I wish I could come up with something constructive, but I can’t. Maybe the overall volume could have been louder, because it’s hard to hear on headphones even on full volume. Nitpicking aside, this is a masterwork. Good job. Looking forward to more.

Yep. Part of the reason it took 6 months is that my Mac was in the shop for several weeks getting repaired. That hit a dent in the process. ANother reason is the TheSkeletonMan wasn’t available to help 24/7 due to school and work. I wanted this to be as perfect as possible. No rushing, taking my time with it, trying to get every little detail.

It’s not just the crossfades that make this meticulous. All cues are in their film versions. Noticeable ones are 2m11 Kill The Batman (added batflap at the end), 2m16 LSI Extraction (proper percussion when Batman jumps off the roof) and 4m45 You Complete Me (annoying "chime" at the beginning of the cue was removed).

I too am not happy with the overall volume. I do wish it was louder, but I didn’t want to mess with that. I did raise the decibels of 7m60b Dent Defeated and 7m62 A Dark Knight though, as they are noticeably loud in the film. And also the beginning of 5m46-47 Wired.

That is one of my biggest pet peeves is when someone combines big cues and makes one giant-ass track out of all of them and keeps the original names. It’s ridiculous. Like Arial’s Batman Begins film mix. I split all the cues where they should’ve been split.

Do you know what lossless means?

Great work! I just have one concern – 6m57 Storming Pruitt Building sounds kind of choppy from 1:55 to 2:10. Was there perhaps an extraction error?

This was one of the most difficult tracks that Tyler had to work on to get the film mix. So many things wrong with it. I’m pretty sure he created some parts of it from scratch. Maybe you hear choppiness, maybe that’s just how the cue is. But idk. It doesn’t bother me.

Upon closer inspection I’ve found the "choppiness" is due to percussion that is kind of clashing with the existing percussion in the original 6m57. I totally get how that would be tough to fix though. I was just confirming that I wasn’t the only one with that version of the track.

Yeah like I said, it was tricky. He mentioned the tempo of the percussion being off in the film vs the raw cue. So he did his best with it. It works for me.

This is all very neat information. It’s not often a person discusses a track by track basis, so this is very welcome information. It’s still a very well put together mix.

You’re still doing the @ thing, even when your post isn’t really responding to anything? DAK will still see you regardless. I’d really like to know when you started using it. Just curious.

The reason DAK started with TDK is because Arial already did one for Begins, even though it wasn’t quite perfect. Hence he will edit that set to refine it. Rises? No lossless source for that yet. I’m betting on the bootleg I’m getting to have it, but I might be getting my hopes up too much. Until then, TDK is all we have.

And like I said in the first post of this thread, this is my final film mix. Just not counting Begins, of course. That’s only a tweak.

I hope someone will be able to craft more film mixes in the future… Especially for Inception and Interstellar, when we’ll get the three missing pieces from the first and the entire sessions of the latter.

The tempo was corrected using the source material to match the tempo of the film version. It was warped beat by beat in that region. I produced a version without the tempo correction just because it was a negligible/small change that didn’t really change the listen-ability of the track. The warping, however, when done, is sometimes noticeable, depending on the method. The percussion layered in is also a reproduction of what is found in the rear channels in the bluray.
