I’m reluctantly sharing this on shrine, but fuck it, so far it’s been very popular. Plus, I don’t like hoarding.

This is a solid demo of Mountains. I made it as a prerequisite to another project I am working on. It provides a slightly different and extended build-up, new orchestration, and basically just a different take on what it sounds like being played with slightly different instruments. Mountains / Tick-Tock was a little more difficult to deconstruct due to the gradual tempo change from 60 to 120 BPM, but I worked out all of the change points.

As always, let me know what you think.

The piano is a bit heavy-handed from when it first appears until around 1:45, at which point it then seems better-mixed with all the other elements. Before that it seems a tad too overpowering.

Once again your mastery over Zimmer’s sound continues to astound me, and I look forward to whatever else you have to show off in the future. 🙂

Very excited to hear this based on Skelly’s comments alone, but I do have just one question: is the piano bit overwhelming and if so, do you tend to fix it, or is it okay as is? 🙂

Not sure why you wouldn’t just listen to it on your own instead of asking me if his opinion is valid, but –
I designed this arrangement to be much more piano-based, because it’s going to be used later in a piano-based project. It sounds exactly as I wanted. That was the only comment on the matter that I have received.

It sounds awesome, and I don’t think he intended to turn people away from the thread with his comment.

The opening to "Mountains" is one of my favorite bits, so the prominence of the piano in the beginning over all the other sound took me by surprise a little. I can see exactly why you arranged it the way you did; it’s not how I would have mixed it, but that’s why it’s your interpretation. Hopefully no one thought what I said earlier meant that what you did sounds bad.

When I spend years learning how to emulate Zimmer’s sound for this film like you have, maybe then I can make my own version. 😉

I don’t mind criticism and honestly I wish I had a focus group or something to have a second set of ears for this type of shit before I release something. When you work on something long enough, it’s like your ears get burned in and you have to walk away and come back a day later to judge the mix fairly again.

It would take maybe two seconds to drop the piano in the mix by a few db, so it’s not a big deal at all. Unfortunately other people around here seem to take things too seriously.

 I know what you mean.
Sometimes I’m doing editing, there might be some error that I can’t fix: some small click, or an imperfect transition, etc. And to me it’s the most blatant thing in the world. But a day later, that mistake that I got so wound up on isn’t even audible to me anymore.

I feel the exact same way. It’s so true.

I just mean a route of communication, I don’t mean literally video calling or anything – I’d never do it either.

Moving these projects off-site would make things faster and easier.
