The Quartet No. 3…. Korngold inserted a number of his film melodies as he did with many of his post war works. The first movement is a bit abrasive. The second movement main theme is a scherzo that dances as if on needlepoints. The Trio is built on a melody from Between Two Worlds. The slow movement to be played �like a folksong� is derived from The Sea Hawk. The finale borrows from the film Devotion.

Elizabeth and Essex, with it glorious score, was a very heated set during production. Bette Davis resented not only Essex being included in the title but resented Errol Flynn to be incapable in the role. They hated each other making this film. Rent it just to see the court scene where she slaps his face, she really gives him a solid belt and his expression is of pure hate- and the film cuts in seconds. One can imagine him lunging for her throat before the crew continued. Years and years later, long after his death, she was interviewed in TV and stated he was absolutely ‘gorgeous’ and then she watched the film and in retrospect said he was just perfect for the part. Of course as a historical drama it was all exaggerated… but Hollywood has never been known to bring a real ‘true story’ accurately to the screen. All this is of no consequence. Like many movies good, bad, stupid, or silly: they gave us outstanding music that sometimes is the best part.

(Bette Davis REALLY wanted the plum role of the nutty Cassie in Kings Row but Jack Warner felt it too small a part for a big name actress and Anne Sheridan was doing double duty portraying Randy in Kings Row while at the same time filming her hysterically funny character Lorraine Sheldon in THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER… opposite Bette Davis))
