Just watched the movie on Youtube. Director Larry Peerce seems to have viewed this as a showcase for the acting talents of his then-wife Marilyn Hassett. She plays a Sylvia Plath-like character who desperately wants to be a poet but instead spends most of the movie slowly unravelling. The problem is we never really understand why she’s having a breakdown, and consequently we don’t really care. (Apparently the film veers a long way from the novel).

Gerald Fried’s score was largely unused in the finished film, which is a shame because his music might have added some internal tension to the scenes where our heroine becomes unglued. I spent some time making educated guesses about the placement of the unused cues, theorising that they best fitted those moments of mental turmoil. I could, of course, be wildly off target, but I suspect no one is going to sit through the movie to test my theories 🙂
