Sibelius’s symphony I only listen to Karajan’s version, and I haven’t tried any other.
Is it good?;)

Sibelius’s symphony I only listen to Karajan’s version, and I haven’t tried any other.
Is it good?;)Sibelius himself said that he "enjoyed" Berglund’s conducting of his music, thereby putting his stamp of approval on it. I personally find Berglund’s interpretations more "indepth" than anybody else’s. (Although Karajan was certainly no slouch himself, of course.)

Download it and give it a try. Worst case scenario, if you don’t like it, then simply delete it and nothing lost. http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg548/dsphipps100/nod.gif

Thank you for a reply, do you have the Colin Davis (5CD BSO) version?I do, and as beautifully as the BSO played, Berglund’s interpretations are far more insightful than Davis’.

This is the second best-kept secret in Sibelius symphonies, after Anthony Collins’ early 1950s Decca set. I already own this set but I just know others are going to love it. 🙂

…after Anthony Collins’ early 1950s Decca set.

I have to agree about Collins. I just recently got the "Sibelius Great Performances" Box Set which includes his recordings and they absolutely are breathtaking! It is a shame that Collins is such a secret these days. His insight into Sibelius music is second to none. I love Karajans early Sibelius recordings. Also the cycle Maazel recorded in the 60s for DECCA with the Vienna Philharmonic (amazing sound!!) and of course Bernstein (both the old ones and the highly discussed late recordings). But Collins is my new favourite.
Berglund’s Sibelius I know from his excellent recording of Sibelius’ early "Kullervo" symphony. So Ill give this cycle a listen. Thanks for posting it bobtheknob!!

Thank you! I had heard so much about this 1st cycle of Berglund’s and it is definitely the best of his. Although I still prefer Barbirolli’s, Berglund’s Symphony No. 1 has idiomatic tempi and the opening clarinet is spaced like I’ve never heard it. Thanks for a chance to hear this cycle, it is really recommendable. I’ve heard maybe 10 cycles so far and this is top 3.
