I Am Type “O" Aries ~ Michiru Oshima
The odd title for this TV series from 1994 (9 episodes) refers to the popular Japanese belief that blood type + astrological sign are significant indicators of one’s personality—like a Western horoscope. The system was used as far back as WW2 to separate men into battle groups and just recently to determine who got selected for a sports team. It is apparently still used in dating services to ensure a good match.
If you are a Type "O" Aries male, you are intelligent, strong, and conscientious. The hero in this film is just such a man, a dedicated employee of a large company where management is corrupt and where a co-worker has just committed suicide. The plot revolves around his determination to see things change, and in the booklet Oshima says that in order to show support for his crusade she wrote music that’s more up-lifting and cheery than you might expect. It is indeed an interesting potpourri: some pretty ballads featuring orchestra and piano (or pan flute), a nice bossa nova, some cool jazz (bongos!), and a few pieces for solo piano, guitar, even a zither. The standouts for me, though, are the two tracks for clarinet and small orchestra (tracks 4 & 9). Oshima has done this sort of thing before with her many jaunty Gershwin-esque tunes, but never this toe-tapping!

17 tracks on Victor Entertainment CD #VICL 632. Released in 1994.
