Thanks! A very big performance of the Seventh from Bernstein – apparently the audience were told to hold their applause as it was being taped. They show remarkable restraint! It’s a pity this was not filmed as it would have been terrific to see live.

Thanks! A very big performance of the Seventh from Bernstein – apparently the audience were told to hold their applause as it was being taped. They show remarkable restraint!Reports that I have read/heard from people who were there indicate the applause had already begun even before the final note was released, which would certainly be understandable. David Hurwitz, in his review of this recording, says he was there and indicates that the applause was very loud, but the orchestra with the extra brass was so much louder that he couldn’t even hear the already-thunderous applause until after the orchestra ended the last note. I suspect they taped the ending in a dress rehearsal to get a "clean" ending.

I do have to agree, however, that the audience did an excellent job throughout the symphony of remaining silent. http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg548/dsphipps100/nod.gif

Many thanks for this 7th, it is realy a bombastic performance, it seems that Lenny was in Leningrad those days of the Nazi encirclement of the city.

"this is easily the most intense Shostakovich recording that I have ever heard"

That’s EXACTLY the problems of these interpretations, and so many others by Lenny. Empty bombast, overripe, cheap.

It looks like morales57 might have downloaded it thanks to your bump, and there’s no telling how many others might have also downloaded this absolutely phenomenal, amazing, insightful, historical, astounding, prodigious interpretation by Bernstein.

I appreciate it! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42753709/Photobucket/yo.gif
