Thanks you. Great lp. By the way, Tadlow will do a COMPLETE rerecording of Thief of Bagdad, maybe after that one, Jungle book would be a good choice.

The source for the Thief of Bagdad / Jungle Book Suites was a DSD archived ļæ½ inch 3 track stereo tape copy of the original sessions tapes, which I acquired in the 1990s. The concert suite from ā€œSodom and Gomorrahā€ was assembled and mixed from a commercial 1/4 inch 4 track tape of the RCA soundtrack album.

JUNGLE BOOK: One of my favorite scores and recordings! Fascinating to compare this to the Varese CD, which sounds a bit "cleaner" (less background hiss) while not quite as "vibrant."

Fantastic share, Stevie. The transfer from tape is excellent – it is hard to credit the source as tape given the clean transfer. The percussion is well caught in "The Procession"[I] & [I]"Gallop of the Flying Horse" and the strings have wonderful body in "The Prince and the Princess". Given this quality it is hard to reconcile why we had to move away from the format into the synthetic digital media. I loved it so much I had to go and re-watch the movie on Blu-Ray last night.

WRONG. Thief of Baghdad and Jungle Book are the NUREMBERG SYMPHONY recordings on Varļæ½se, which shouldn’t be shared here in the first place.

WRONG. Thief of Baghdad and Jungle Book are the NUREMBERG SYMPHONY recordings on Varļæ½se, which shouldn’t be shared here in the first place.

First off these were mastered from reel tape sources, from stereo recordings made by RCA and released by RCA in 1957 in monaural only, not from the Varese CD, which, in my opinion, did not do these works justice, performance or sound wise. Varese did not have anything to do with the making of these recordings. The company did not even exist in 1957. Second the Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra is listed on the original RCA album cover because that was the name of the original recording orchestra. The orchestra changed its name to the Nuremberg Symphony in 1963, seven years after this recording was made, so the changed name was listed on the Varese CD, which was released in 1990, licensed from Colosseum. To make it even clearer, not a single note of my download was derived from the Varese CD, as I would not try to circumvent or violate this board’s rules and regulations. If you had contacted me by PM addressing your concern I would have been happy to explain this to you or any other Board member with similar concerns.

First of all a big thanks for sharing this release! It indeed sounds much better than the Varese-CD. Iļæ½m not very sure though that the Varese Jungle Book Suite is the same or if RCA indeed recorded it in the 50s. Hereļæ½s my reason: the German record label Colosseum (which licensed all regular Varese albums for release in German until shortly) made their own recording of the suite in 1982 for a German release with narrator Elmar Gunsch. It was recorded in Nļæ½rnberg with Klauspeter Seibel conducting under Rļæ½zsa’s supervision. Since their deal with Colosseum was reciprocative Varese issued this recording in the US without the narration coupled with the Thief of Baghdad Suite. Just as they licensed for example Elmer Bernstein’s Rozsa album for release in the US which was originally produced by Colosseum.
I have yet to do a close comparison of the two albums but Iļæ½m pretty sure that there is a 1982 recording of Jungle Book since I owned the original Colosseum LP a long time ago and I vaguely remember the recording date being stated on the cover.
I know itļæ½s not that important. Iļæ½m just one of these audiophile nerds that look on these things šŸ™‚
