FOUR DISNEY ALICE COMEDIES & THE MAGIC CLOCK (Dessau) DSD Remix/Remaster FLAC

In 1923, while still working in Kansas City, Kansas, Walt Disney began producing silent shorts loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice character. Among the first films to combine live-action (Alice) with animated characters, including Julius the cat (the precursor of Mickey Mouse), the Alice Comedies were Disney’s first successes. The series included 57 films, most of which were animated by Walt Disney himself with his brother Roy filming the live action and released through Winkler Pictures between 1923 & 1927.

Four of these shorts featured original musical scores by German composer Paul Dessau, all of which were recorded in 1996 with the RIAS Sinfonietta conducted by Hans-E. Zimmer as part of RCA/BMG’s series, 100 Years of Film Music and released on CD only in Germany. Also on this CD was Dessau’s score for Ladislaw Starewicz’s 1928 film, “The Magic Clock.” Unfortunately, like all of the releases in this series, the music was recorded at a ridiculously low level and the resulting CDs featured less than ideal sound, mostly due to the decision to mix them in the now outdated early 1980s Dolby Surround. This new DSD remix/remaster of Dessau’s wonderful music substantially improves the overall sound and stereo spread of these recordings, in my opinion. I hope you agree.
