53rd National Sports Festival: Autumn Event (lossless/flac)
The National Sports Festivals are Japan’s premier sporting event, having started in 1946 and continuing today (2016 is the 71st!). The 53rd Festival was held in 1998 in the city of Yokohama and, as with all the others, had its own theme ("National Dream"), its own mascot (apparently a seagull—see CD cover), and specially-commissioned music too, this time by Michiru Oshima. The Festival usually takes place 2 times a year, one featuring winter sports and a bigger one with all the remaining events. This CD is for the "Autumn Event" which is presumably the non-Winter one. I do not know if Oshima also composed the music for the Winter event.

The music starts off with a cheerleading tune, followed by some synth-y takes on 60s-80s dance music as well as a couple of brash Latin numbers. Luckily, the Kanagawa Philharmonic is here too: "Freedom" is a soaring theme, and "Eternity" one of those sweeping slow melodies Oshima does so well. Tracks 14, 15 &16 are titled "Marine Illusions" I, II and III. The 1st is dreamy and impressionistic, while the 2nd adds more pomp. The 3rd is a fanfare with enough cymbal-clashing to cause your earbuds to pop out.
18 tracks on Stand Up CD# SUCD 0003. Released in 1998.
