What the admin says go home, okay, but normally in forums, if there’s a group of people who want "a change" then depending of the case, for the well being of the users something would be done.. Not that I know of. BUT, when Jessie had to deal with the dl forums he got very burnt out very quick. They cannot keep a mod there thanks to the bullshit that goes on. Sparky is ruthless, and I think mods want a tight leash for now. As I am NOT a mod that is just speculation on my part. But the facts as we see them show that Jessie has not undone anything, at least openly and Sparks has or seems to have free reign.

I think that’s the only option why Spark is still a mod no matter how much he does not do his job right sometimes or people are not happy with him at all, because literally there’s no one else and Jessie I guess would rather have him and people complaining than having no one at all.. we don’t have no one no matter if Sparky’s here anyway, there’d literally be no difference, if so, less drama about him. He’s ruthless and not in the good way. As in, not "for the sake of the forum" or "people". zvonko1510 can be a real pain-in-the-ass sometimes, not to mention rude as hell. I’d like to believe something is lost in translation, since English is not his native language, and while I think there is something to that, I know his personality must have at least something to do with it.

Having said that …

Who gives a shit? It’s words, not sticks and stones. It’s not like he rants randomly for no reason and as far as I can tell he doesn’t go out-of-his-way to annoy people or be rude on purpose. There is a thought process behind it all. He’s not just some ugly troll trying to get a rise out of people.

Also he hasn’t broken anything major that I can see. There’s been no egregious transgressions. No attacks on race or religion or politics etc.
In other words, it’s really not so bad in my opinion.

And let’s face it, he’s shared a lot of great music, including that rather amazing Spaghetti Western Thread. Being a sticky was nice but I don’t care about that as much as it being open. Remove it from sticky status (so what) but don’t close it. That’s a crime!

At the end of the day, I call him a friend, because we all have some good and bad in us, some more so than others, but at the end of the day he is more good than bad and he does what we all want here … share the music.

There’s a couple of people that think the same, actually, those are the kind of people who have been in the Shrine before the music happened, who remember this place to be much better without drama and legal issues or anything. I can understand them. But I honestly, really like the music part of this forum. I don’t think I could get what I get in this place, in any other. Haha! Give me some credit, if I’d listen my gut, I would ban every annoying user which asks for a FLAC version of a release in the lossy thread, without bothering to use the Requests area (talking about basic Netiquette here). Still, I do get above such things, I’ve moderated this kind of boards for more than 10 years, I put my personal issues aside.
Facts are on my side, though, the worst drama has always originated over at Film, TV, etcetera.

My main gripe at the moment is the closing of the Spaghetti Western thread.

I don’t see anything happening in that thread to warrant such an action.

I’m no expert but I’ve been on the ‘net since the early 1990’s, before web browsers even existed and people used usenet as forums, and in my forum experience, a thread usually gets closed for very specific reasons. Either it has no place in the forum or the thread is so old and hasn’t had any posts in ages or someone, usually 2 or more people, make various off-topic posts in the thread that take it in a direction totally different than the topic name and thread (up to that point) indicate. Also they can be closed due to excesses abuse but usually said posts are deleted rather than close the thread, especially in the case of a thread that is seen as still being viable (worthy of continued posts).

So again, maybe I’m missing something, but, I just don’t see anything to warrant the closing of the thread. Perhaps an explanation by the mod would set us straight. And I use the word "us" because I’m clearly not the only one here befuddled by this thread being closed.

Perhaps I’m not really in the best position to say anything – this username has been a member for a short while, a previous username, abandoned because I had to close down an email account for reasons too mundane to go into, was a member for longer. I’ve never been a prolific sharer – my old name shared more and contributed more – but I’ve been coming here for a few years.

My observation is that the moderation seems to be quite arbitrary – in some ways it doesn’t seem to really be about behaviour, but about the thread itself and some personal dislike of that thread. I have no idea if there’s any truth in that – it is simply the way it seems.

The spaghetti western thread and the Doctor Who Audio Drama thread seem to have been shut for reasons that don’t seem to warrant the actions. At least on the face of it – but the notices of closure or the messages are pretty skewed towards it being an action of personal distaste rather than a moderated arbitration. The Doctor Who thread was given a message that said it was a lawless frontier town and that Sparktank was sick of having to babysit the members – when in reality it is largely a bunch of fairly genial geeks sharing things they like. There have been moments of insane drama for sure, and it’s been ugly at times – but not for quite some time really.

The crux of Sparktank’s message very much seems to be that the majority of members pretty much stick to that forum. Whether that in itself is in the spirit of an online forum or perfectly understandable in an online forum for a niche interest in the first place is debatable I suppose – but if (and I emphasise if) it has been closed for a week ostensibly because of a brief slightly passionate exchange of opinion but really because the moderator doesn’t personally like the thread or a minority of people in the thread then that’s not moderation really.

Same with the Spaghetti Western thread too.

That’s just observations based on my thoughts – and I’m perfectly willing to accept that I’m second guessing in completely the wrong direction – but the reality is there are people being punished for the actions of a minority and no matter the reasoning that does seem very heavy handed.

It is not YOUR forum…..

It seems to me that some users even got this extremely idiotic idea that, since they have uploaded a lot, they or their threads are somewhat above the rules… That’s simply not the case, well, I’d hope so, at least.

But in the Doctor Who Audio Drama thread the reason given for closing the thread is that people reported someone for what they were posting.

From what I could see there is one person there whose posting style is sometimes quite abbrasive. And he/she seems to sometimes pick on certain people.
I’d have thought a warning to that poster was what was needed.

In the two posts on why the thread has been closed TheSparktank™ 2.1 actively encourages the other users of the thread to bully the offending poster when the thread re-opens.

I do appreciate that modding is a hard, thankless task. I’m appreciative of it and absolutely wouldn’t question it in normal circumstances.
But these actions just seem like an appalling way of dealing with it and only set up more problems in the future.

Consequence that attack: DOWN LIKE & SEARCH SYSTEM.
When all search system is down, it is normal that you can not use LATEST THREAD option eighter.

Okay, I apologize if this may not be following in accordance with this "argument" (another one?) nor have I read all the pages, BUT, (I have a but), anything Sparktank, Jessie, Leon Scott Kennedy, or any other moderator has ever done here is probably warranted, because I know they are not idiots. There are a lot users (I shall not name any) that like to lash out or complain, and these things (as has been said) happen because some don’t show respect. There is always a reason for anything that happens. And this has most definitely been said before, if you don’t like it, leave. It’s not that bad here, I mean the Film music forum and Video Game forum community’s are very different, and stupid arguments start in the Film music forum so often, more now probably than ever. People like to act like they are high and mighty and know everything because they’ve uploaded a shit-ton. Then when something is uploaded that they want and it’s not "lossless" they whine, complain, and it all leads to actions of our moderators. This is no dictatorship (and be DAMN thankful Leon is not in control of everything, no offense to you Leon). Shit Happens? Yes. There is never no reason. I think some people are bored, and are spending their time poorly by arguing. Be thankful for the music, it’s free, it is not good to be ungrateful.

The modding in that thread went from zero to over-reaction in a heartbeat. Yes the poster in question was confrontational and abrasive but nothing that a pm wouldn’t have solved and nothing that anyone was particularly reacting badly to. In general the thread was a civilised place to be and unfortunately the modding and the utterly bizarrely aggressive way in which it was implemented seem totally out of place. Just my five cents.

If I had to look simply and only at Sparktank’s reason for closure, only one thing would come time to mind: bullshit driven by some kind of personal issue with you. The closure of the thread did look unwarranted, personally, though, I wouldn’t have been against the "un-sticky" things, but that’s because I was under the impression that we simply don’t sticky download links threads, regardless of how good and well organized they are.

Okay, I’m not an old-timey user around here — I only discovered this place because of the DW thread — and I may be opening myself up as a target (for a variety of people), but as someone who is/has been a mod on other forums, wikis, email groups, listservs, etc over the last twenty years, I feel the need to say something.

Moderating is an ungodly tough job. Users often treat mods with disdain. But a moderator should never work without a cool head, and needs a skin thicker than anything. Now, I’ve been a member here for about 2 years. I don’t post much, I share what I can, I try and be a good, if quiet, participant. Over the last few months, what I’ve witnessed in the DW thread has been a level of moderation that has gone from Almost Zero to Practically Draconian since Sparktank made his first appearance there. On any forum, arguments happen from time to time, sometimes people work it out or get over it, and sometimes someone hits the report button, whether they should or not. A moderator has to judge the merit of such reports, not just issue a knee-jerk reaction. And the so-called "drama" that Spark shut the thread down over, really didn’t warrant such action. I can’t imagine any other mod on any other forum I’ve ever been a part of would have done the same thing in response to what was going on. At most, it called for some strongly worded PMs directed to one or two people, as only one or two people were getting in each other’s faces. Are warnings towards a specific user even something that happens here? Or is closing an entire thread the standard when one person makes an arse of themselves? Because the latter seems to be all that goes on from what I’ve witnessed and heard here.

As I said before, moderating is tough. It is thankless. It is emotionally draining. But if you aren’t up to dealing with all that justly, impartially and unemotionally, then you shouldn’t be doing it at all. I have to question the emotional maturity of any moderator that would start a self-serving pity party thread such as this.

He does hate to moderate us, to "babysit us" as he has told us, he just keeps on because there’s no one else wanting to take the job (up until now, I think) and the admin prefers to have him doing shit than no one else moderating. But now LSK offers himself to the thing. Sparky is not needed anymore. LSK will be darn strict. But I’m PRETTY SURE he won’t do as much as the bad choices Sparky has.

Which actually brings to mind a question I’ve had for a while. How does one contact an admin here? To discuss issues with a moderator who may have overstepped themselves. I looked a while ago when Sparks displayed his questionable decision-making skills and temperament a couple of months ago, and couldn’t find any means to do so.

Send a PM to Jessie. Sarah’s also the main admin, owner and all, but not sure if they’d do anything.

Oh, I’ve had my couple of screw-ups as moderator here, I’m not without flaws; a few of the users over at the lossless video game soundtrack thread could probably share a few stories, but they would hopefully also state that I tried to the best of my abilities to explain the reasoning behind my actions, when questioned about them.

I have a few things that I’d like to share there but now can’t until the tenth… (That is, if the thread is locked for the same duration as the audio drama one) I’m not even sure why the audio drama thread was locked, Sparktank’s message seemed overly opinionated and very much unnecessary. I feel like everything is turned upside down, they’re the angels (and I do mean it, guys and girls, seriously, I feel almost bored as a moderator), you’re the ones problematic.

That’s what I mean when I say you and Jessie are not idiots: you’ve never decide to do anything without reason. As for Sparktank: I’m not completely sure anymore, maybe he has lashed out before when he shouldn’t have. I thought a solution
was found, I guess not. So what needs to happen here? Hmmm… I don’t know anymore. Should Sparktank continue moderating and get his act together? Should he step down and someone take his place? We will have to see I suppose.

I went through the same thing, in the past. Stop "caring"… For real. Don’t create these threads, don’t let personal issues dictate your actions. ‘Tis only an Internet board, is the administration okay with the way you are handling things? If so, be sure to make that known the next time folks/troublemakers show up, because by then the "blame" can’t be put on you. Users will either have to deal with it, if they plan to stick around, or leave.

I get the feeling that things wouldn’t have degenerated the way they did if Film/TV had a more active moderation ever since its inception; don’t you try to fool me into thinking otherwise, Film guys: there was a limit to how much Jessie could have gotten done on his own. As for what LSK says I need to admit that he’s right, that in other forums, or a any other normal forum per se, people can’t complain personally that much to what an admin does or says (I admit doing so, too, I’m not free of any sin) and I’m glad the admins are looking for options or mods to solve the thing. And I personally would like, if new rules would be made in place, so I can read them and be sure not to break them in any form.. since y’all know me and with more strictness, I honestly would rather not be banned if anything happened, though I promise to keep firm if good moderation gets in form.

I would like my point to be taken in mind though, that Sparky is not the most evil (though he has done bad shit out of personal spite but that’s different..) and he has done a couple of bad moderating jobs, and some right, and I’d also admit some users have abused him and complained and given him shit for things that weren’t his fault, or anything to do with him, or a result of his moderation. Still I’d like the point to be considerated, that he did wrong things. Some users did abuse the lack of moderation, but others were seriously complaining about things that Sparky didn’t do right. Let’s not blame just the userbase only.

I can admit and agree that there’s been a lack of moderation for years and a bunch of bad users have abused of it. Even I sometimes. Sometimes I kept talking bad to mods, defying them, when by rule and in any other forum that thing is not allowed and warrants either a warning, or if you’re strict, a ban. When I personally thought Sparky had done a bad thing, the correct thing would be talking to mods or admins personally instead of publicly attacking.

Well, I get the feeling we’re leaning toward making a community poll; it might give users some peace of mind (it would be a chance to see how many folks have the guts to make a choice and live with it), but even if it doesn’t, I’d argue it will certainly do that for the Staff.

There actually WAS a site for that… Galbadia Hotel. Unfortunately from what my hazy memory recalls, there was a lot of trouble (Cease and desist emails etc) and that it was taken down… then Sarah (I think) brought the download section here and… we have what we have now. Don’t know why Sarah or the any of the other admin abandoned the main site, as it was once a good source of info… now… smh

All I can say is that I agree. I wouldn’t like this place as much without the download threads and they are not completely to be blamed as you said before.

My intuitive impression, perhaps a paranoiac one, of this site due to it not being shut down like many similar others is that a great deal of information on users is gleaned by ‘authorities’. I’m pretty sure many users have had ‘warning’ aka ‘threatening’ letters from ISPs about downloading goodies. I’ve switched ISPs twice over the past 5 or so years because downloads were constantly blocked, anyway I digress. Some shrine patrons have shared some top-notch stuff which is simply unavailable elsewhere, perhaps deleted. Others have made great contributions through funny posts or practical ones and so on. I’d have to say some of the scraps we’ve witnessed/been-involved-in were/are awesome too. Troll-bashing is a modern day pass-time. Although I’ve got two wankers on my ignore list. It’s all good!

Actually, something else I have to say back on the Moderator subject is… How come there are 2 moderators for the Video Game Music thread and only 1 for the Film Music thread, considering the latter has 4x more activity than the VGM thread.
We should either enlist another moderator for the Film Music thread or one of the Mods of the VGM thread switch over.

Oh, I WILL blame the download section. Before it was here, the amount of thread necromancy, arguments, abuse against admin etc etc was incredibly low.
