"In memoriam" is more than words. And I keep exploring Herrmann’s works, his life and what he loved in radio. Yes… that! I have been looking for and finding musicians and people who worked for and with him on Columbia radio when he was their chief of conducting classical musics. And for all I’ve learned there are little on-air recordings of what he did… including what he did with and for the most tender, expressive and original composer who more than influenced him… for he loved Delius. Me, too, from a Sunday afternoon when I first saw ANYTHING of Ken Russell’s direction… it was the "Song of Summer" Russell created with his best ever producer… and with the then young man who suffered, survived and was united with Delius forever when Delius got himself paralyzed. Yes, Herrmann was intensively devoted to Delius and his music: it was (in his words) his sole great influence and he was open about that.
There is so much richness to explore not only in his Herrmann’s music but about his life and soul. And what he did in London as a conductor and producer — which is what you are giving us — is another grateful thing you share.
Have you ever heard his recording of Holst’s "The Planets"? Yes, I have dozens of those recordings. But my favorite remains Herrmann’s more than intuitive version of this.
