I dunno, I actually liked the movie. It was cheesy, dumb fun, and I happen to be a sucker for a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and just has fun. Look at Raul Julia, you know, even though he was sadly dying at the time, that he was having a blast playing M. Bison. The music I remember being great too, particularly the bit during Bison’s speech about his motives. Then again, I’m not a fan of the Street Fighter video games, so I don’t have any grounds to be offended by, I guess. Anyway, I digress. I’d love a link to Graeme Revell’s score. Thanks in advance!

The story of how Street Fighter The Movie happened is fascinating as an example of how many things can go wrong. Van Damme was a total trainwreck during it, having been divorced and working basically on a coke binge.

I remember of a interview of the writer/director Steven E de Souza (on a French magazine called IMPACT), and he basically get the job ’cause the studio was looking for someone who could wrote the whole thing in the shortest time possible.

He wrote the script of Street Fighter in less than 48 hours, then he called the studio, and told them that it was (and i quote) "pretty easy to wrote". The studio was so impressed by his confidence that they decided to simply offer De Sousa to direct the movie.

FYI, Universal try to produce a sequel, with Van Damme and a part of the original cast.

They finally decided to make a reboot, which is probably the worst thing ever created connected to Street Fighter : The Legend of Chun-LI.

At least the first movie was fun(ny) and cheesy! And the score is great!

Actually, there’s a review on Youtube from a series called Good Bad Flicks that covered Street Fighter. Sure, of the fifteen minutes, nine of it is mostly a recap of the movie with jokes, but the last five minutes covers a lot of interesting stuff about how the film got made and general trivia and acknowledgement of the many many references to the original games, and rebuttals to common complaints about the movie (I.e., the movie’s unintentionally funny, when it was always meant to be funny from the start.) Apparently, part of the reason DeSouza wanted to do the film was because he was a huge fan of the games, thanks to his son and him playing Street Fighter II in the arcades. He thanked him by putting his son in the movie in a cameo. I’d say more, but the video is easily found and, though my recommendation might not be worth much, I might as well. Somebody might take my suggestion, I suppose.

Just thought I’d throw in a suggestion. Not exactly massively in-depth (save that for the Exploring series he does, which somehow managed to make Blair Witch 2 sound appealing,) but it’s informative enough, I suppose.

And yeah, I think no matter what we think of the 90s movie and its actual merits or lack thereof, we can all join hands and say in unison, that Legend of Chun-Li is LIGHT-YEARS worse. I mean, say what you want about how miscast Raul Julia was, at least he managed to turn in such an energetic and hammy performance you could overlook it–plus he is endlessly quotable. I can’t remember a single freaking thing about Bison in that movie, or indeed, anything about that movie, other than a vague recollection that it was really, really unpleasant and best left forgotten. Plus, it completely wastes Michael Clarke Duncan. That in itself is unforgivable.
