For me this is Stu Phillips’ finest hour – exotic, colourful, faintly psychedelic, it’s a long way from his comparatively straightforward scoring of such things as Battlestar Gallactica and Buck Rogers. Very much of its time (the late 60s) the score follows the “adventures” of three young surfers as they travel around the world looking for the ultimate wave. The music is deceptively light and always fun – although the physical danger of surfing is occasionally highlighted by moments of musical tension and apprehension, particularly the climactic track “Waimea – Straight Down” which is quite thrilling and even a little nightmarish, a concatenation of ominous pulsing electronics and Omen-esque voices going “Eeeeeeeeee!” as some monster wave threatens to engulf our young heroes.

All in all, it’s quite a trip 🙂

This is my own rip from the scarce 2007 Japanese CD which was released in a reproduction mini LP sleeve. The CD also contains one extra song, “Someday.”

Not many documentaries warrant the release of a soundtrack. Can’t wait to listen. Thanks!
