Note: after the recent posting of the recording sessions to this, I immediately set out to name the tracks and work on the sound.

The naming process was fairly easy, most of the tracks were on the OST while others required a re-watching of the film.

As for the sound editing process, that was fairly easy as well. I removed some silences (totalling a little over a minute), faded each and every track in and out, boosted the volume according to each track’s demands and applied an EQ filter to every session-sourced track which brightened up the sound considerably to make a difference.

One problem I learned very quick is that I found the raw sessions to sound very flat and lifeless. Even when boosting the volumes of each track, the sound wasn’t very loud or clear on my headphones, sounds weren’t wowing me as they should, it was just dull, so boosting the upper three octaves not only cleared the sound up but also made me notice instruments previously buried in the mix that I hadn’t noticed before. Listeners can now feel the power of the orchestra much better now.

In only one instance, I mixed two cues together (Mushroom House and Artifacts/Goodbye Max were two separate tracks on the sessions but one cue on the album). I left the other tracks alone apart from the sound editing.

To complete this deluxe edition, I compared the album tracks as I was naming the nameless session tracks. Between the OST and sessions, some cues were shortened, some had slight mixing differences, one (Max’s Things) had a part of another track (the opening of Hannah and the Institute from the sessions) mixed into its opening, and only one (Hannah and the Institute) was unrecognizable on the OST from how they sound in the film and appear on the sessions. I included those 9 tracks (totaling around 24.5 minutes) as bonus material following the main presentation, as usual.

This isn’t a deluxe edition I ever put much thought into doing before the sessions leaked. I was satisfied with the album, until the sessions leaked and it was brought to my attention that there is a whole 20 minutes missing from the OST. I had to jump on that boat, so to speak, ASAP. I hope you all enjoy my work on this awesome score from a composer that seriously needs more work.

One other note: leveling this score out was a small nightmare. Sometimes the quieter cues were easy to work with, other times there would be a crescendo in the middle which would make the softer parts a little harder to hear compared to other softer cues. All in all, I think I made it work but, I’m not entirely satisfied. I won’t go back to it because there’s not much one can do to fix it so I’ll leave it as is.
