*ATTENTION HIGHLANDER FANS* ‘Remastering’ the Score from HIGHLANDER

Highlander’s score by Michael Kamen boasts a very elegant sound, but a full release has never been made. Sure, we have gotten 15 minutes on a promo (which I happen to have a physical copy of) but we want to go the full mile.
I am beginning a project to ‘remaster’ Highlander’s score. I have the sessions but they have been mixed poorly. There are multiple segments where the music is distorted, inaudible or is just muted. Remastering this will take a few liberties. While the score, itself, will be unaltered, some elements will need to be removed and rerecorded. With this project finished, we will be able to finally listen to the Kamen score in it’s full glory!

I recommend SonicAdventure’s skill and wisdom if you plan to "remaster" anything, and if the sessions sound as bad as you say….

Great news! I have found a decent recording of the original sessions. It seems to be missing a few of the piano tracks and the Church Bells cue but has everything else, with very little distortion. I won’t be able to use the Bluray/DVD 5.1 track as the score sounds garbage in the mix, very compressed. The timpani you hear in the sessions is actually a keyboard sampler, so should I replace it with a live timpani?

Hopefully it will be done by December. I would also love to have the Copeland score to Highlander II but unfortunately it has been lost for quite sometime. Apparently he still has the sessions…

Also, I will be posting the score to Mega.co.nz (or Mega.co or what ever it’s called). I’ll also create some artwork and maybe some liner notes. It’ll be nice to have a physical copy. It will be a 2 disc, possibly 3 disc set, including the original album from 1995, the Queen album – film and album mixes etc. Does anyone have the slate titles/ numbers?

You say "Sessions". I have many, many different versions of this score and all of them are varying sound quality. I’m sure the sessions do exist, but I’d love to know who has them. The mix in the film of the music even sounds poor and wavers in places. (Panzer and Davis clearly spent 5 bucks in mixing the sound, which is a shame.) I’d love a pristine copy of this. Kamen’s estate MUST have tapes of this somewhere?

Very interested in this one… looks like some of us may have varying pieces of this score. Can you share any kind of track listing? I know personally I’ve been collecting bits here and there since 1986; I’ll dig up what I’ve got and share the listing…

I’ve gone through the film and done a sort of spotting session, finding where music ends and begins. Some of the tracks are fixed. The strings only tracks like ‘Hospital Interview’ needed to be re-recorded so I replicated them to make an identical match. This is much tougher than it looks. If anyone has any resources/recordings they would like to share, feel free to put them in this thread. I will begin a new one for the release, and copy those links (with credit). Aiming for a March release or earlier.

JUST A QUICK QUESTION:
How do you want the album to be presented?…
A normal album, with alternates, demos and out takes at the end of the album
OR
A recording session album, with alternates placed immediately after their respected cues. Queen music at the end of the album.

I myself would like them in order and the Queen music at the end. Just my opinion and thanks for all of the hard work.

Personally, I’d like to see it in order of sequence of the movie… with the Queen songs included therein; with alts and outtakes at the end. That said, I’m just happy I’m not the only one that cherishes this score/songs… I’ll check my resources and see what I’ve got.

This is in all honesty my second favorite score and with nothing in the news about any remaster in the works, I’m more than happy someone with the skills is doing work on a fitting score.

When will it be rady?

No one in their right mind puts alternates at the end… It defeats the purpose of recording sessions. You need to have the original and alternate cue side-by-side to hear the difference. People who don’t like it can either delete the alternates or move them to the back of the line themselves.
I’m a huge Highlander fan so I’m definitely looking forward to this!
