Get ready to be green with envy. I’m from Chicago. Groucho was close friends with a professor at Northwestern University and was persuaded to come to town for "An Evening With." (It took place a few years before this recording.) I was 13 and already a devout Marxist. Wild horses couldn’t have kept me away. It was a relatively intimate gathering, not more than 300 people. He wasn’t in the best of spirits. I remember someone yelling, "Hey, Groucho! Will you say, ‘Say the secret word and the duck’ll come down?’" "NO!" he snarled. "What is this, give-away night." He spoke for about an hour, took questions – which resulted in him insulting every questioner – for another 10 minutes, and sang "Lydia" before packing it in. Far from his prime, but still the funniest man that ever lived and I got to see him in person!
