The Phantom of the Opera – Playback Mixes (2004 Film Version)

Back in 2013, I got a set of what was purported to be the sessions for the 2004 film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. As it turned out, this set was incomplete and largely comprised of tracks from the extended soundtrack album and some very poor quality DVD rips complete with dialogue and SFX! However, amongst all of that were 6 tracks that couldn’t possibly have come from anywhere but the actual playback mixes themselves, which I’m now making available here for the very first time. Details are as follows:

2m12 – Angel of Music (unlike the extended/highlights soundtrack releases, this does not include the spoken dialogue between Christine and Meg)

2m15 – Incidental Music/The Mirror (unlike the extended soundtrack/highlights release, this does not include the dialogue spoken by Raoul)

3m22B – Stranger Than You Dreamt It (unlike the extended soundtrack release, this does not include the dialogue spoken by the Phantom)

5m35 – Journey To The Cemetery (unlike the extended soundtrack release, this does not include the dialogue spoken by Christine)

6m42A-B – Twisted (unlike the extended soundtrack release, this does not include the dialogue spoken by Christine and Raoul)

6m44-45 – Chandelier Crash/Down Once More (unlike the extended/highlights soundtrack releases, this does not include the SFXs or dialogue spoken by Carlotta, the Managers and Madame Giry, neither does it include that nasty volume dip in the music just before ‘Down Once More’ either).

Finally, for this film version, the orchestra was recorded and mixed first, the vocals were then recorded and mixed second and it wasn’t until the main filming itself that the dialogue was eventually recorded and added to the mix. Therefore, what we’ve got here are 6 tracks that have never been commercially released in the form as described above and could not have been manufactured by someone ripping the DVD/Blu-ray soundtrack either. So somehow a bootleg copy of the playback mixes the cast mimed to during the filming process did leak and is out there somewhere, and if anyone has any information about it, I would be most grateful if they could let me know.

These ones are not as they don’t appear on any soundtrack album or DVD blu-ray release in this form at all – trust me I know. Furthermore, there’s no way they could have been recreated either as I’ve done a number of comparisons between them and the extended soundtrack release to know they’re genuine (I’ve also ripped every DVD/Blu-Ray soundtrack mix available as well to know once again, it’s just not possible to make these up via that method either). The rest of the tracks Garage included as I stated were a mixture of poor quality DVD rips and tracks from the extended soundtrack release.
