I’m sharing with you the last work of Kentaro Haneda in the anime industry as music composer, it was for a pair of OVAs based on a singular and modern take on the Tale of Genji. These OVAs and the whole "Genji Plan", which was an ambitious project created by Yun Kouga, didn’t bring any success. For some reason, this franchise was never completed and was left unfinished. Although the story in the OVAs is suddenly finished, it’s obvious that there was much more planned to it.
I tell you this because once you listen to the soundtracks of Volume I & II of the OVAs, you’ll notice that there is something lacking, a vague feeling of incompleteness. I can’t be sure but I’d say that Haneda couldn’t or wasn’t allowed to bring to completion what he had in mind about this soundtrack. Even so, these albums are not a bad effort, just not all that great coming from Haneda.
Being his last work scoring an anime, I feel like if Haneda was looking back on his career and somehow using every little thing that made him so unique as a way of saying goodbye to that part of his life. In 1992 he left his final legacy as anime composer, practically revisiting every facet of his style: accessible orchestral cues, emotional and intimate piano melodies, melodramatic and cinematic music, baroque or neo-classical inspired pieces, groovy funky action music and guitar-driven tracks.
I’m not going to lie, these soundtracks are not amongst his best, not by a long shot. Nevertheless, there is material that is worthy of being known and enjoyed for those of you who appreciate good music and, above all, the work of one of the most defining figures in the art of anime scoring.
Enjoy it.
Gotta thank you for helping me get some of the stuff of him I never thought I wold get. 🙂
Also… I prefer that he would be chosen to make the soundtrack of 3×3 Eyes instead of kaoru Wada. First 2 drama cds soundtrack are great, but I don’t get why change to kaoru wada and keeping him to the Ova soundtracks.
I don’t include scans in my uploaded albums for a simple reason. I always upload scans of the content of the albums to the respective album pages on vgmdb.
So, if you want scans of this or any other album that I’ve shared on this forum, try the vgmdb links of those albums and look at the covers section. Mind you, to be able to see/download the full versions of the images you have to be logged in.
I know…I know but its a free share. lol
