My 2nd favorite film score of 2013 (next to MoS),
here’s the complete score to Rob Simonsen’s simple but wonderful The Spectacular Now.
Not much was needed to make this film edit, only a few fade-ins/fade-outs here and there and shortening some cues. That’s about it.
There’s not a whole lot of score in the film – about a half hour’s worth.
But that’s all that was needed. That’s how good this score is in my opinion.
I know I’ve already turned several people on to it, I hope many more will give this a daily listen.
hack3rman tweaked the OST cover for me and made the one you see above.
As always, post in the thread if you want the link and I’ll PM you.
Enjoy, everyone 😀

Here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/official-2013-fyc-thread-165262/#post2530951) is the FYC which can also be found in my 2013 FYC Thread.
Most of the titles from my complete edit are taken from the FYC, however I used a few of the OST names.
That’s one of the things that differ between the two: The FYC cues get their titles from dialogue spoken by the characters in the film.
The OST cue titles more describe what’s going on in the film.
Here’s a breakdown:
"I Had the Best Fucking Girlfriend"
FYC title. OST title is "My Name Is Sutter Keely". You obviously can’t have "fucking" used on a commercially-released score, so that’s why it was changed. Both versions run the same length. They open and end the same, however the entire middle segment is different. FYC version is the film version, OST is an alternate.
"You Came Along"
FYC title. OST title is "Paper Route". The FYC is the film version, OST version contains nearly 2.5 minutes of material not used in the film.
"You’re Such a Good Listener"
Only released on the FYC.
"You Read A Lot?"
FYC title. OST title "Amy’s House". Both versions are identical.
"IM-ing Cassidy 1"
FYC title. The FYC version contained only the first part of this cue, which is split in 2 for 2 different scenes. It’s different from the film version, which can be found on the OST.
"You’re Absolutely Beautiful"
FYC title. OST title "Walk In the Trees". Both versions are identical.
"IM-ing Cassidy 2"
OST title. This is the second half of the version found on the OST, which is the film version. The first half found on the FYC is an alternate.
"You Shouldn’t Treat Her This Way"
FYC title. OST title "Turn It Around". This is the film version, taken off the FYC. The OST version has an added cymbal at the climax of the cue, making it an alternate.
"You Come Here"
Only released on the FYC.
"I Think That You’re Wonderful"
FYC title. OST title "Prom Flask". FYC contains the film version. OST version is roughly 1:14 longer, making it an alternate.
"I Did It / I Want to Call Him"
FYC title. OST title "I Did It". Both version are identical, the cue just has a fade-in in the film.
"I Know Where He Is"
FYC title. OST title "Porch Talk". Both version are identical, the cue just has an early fade-out in the film.
"I Live In the Now"
FYC title. OST title "I Wasn’t Kicked Out, I Left". FYC version is a combination of "I Wasn’t Kicked Out, I Left" and "Waiting Room".
"Waiting Room"
OST title. FYC title "I Live In the Now" – which is a combination of these 2 cues. They were split because there is a minute-long gap in the FYC version.
"Goodbye, Cassidy
OST title. FYC title "I Don’t Think That’s A Very Good Idea". Both versions identical, cue has an added fade-in in the film.
"I Can’t Promise You That / I Need to Keep Going"
FYC title. OST title "Leaving Her". Cue has added fade-in in the film.
"I’m A King"
Same title on FYC/OST. Film version.
"I Was Never Not Afraid"
FYC title. OST title "Towards An Unknown Future". Both are identical. Film mix has an abrupt end which then leads into the end credits.
"Song for Zula" by Phosphorescent
End Credits, pt. I. Shortened from the commercially-released single version.
"Drive to Dad’s / Walk In the Trees Reprise"
End Credits, pt. II. "Drive to Dad’s" is an unused cue from the FYC. "Walk In the Trees" is a reprise of the cue "You’re Absolutely Beautiful" (it was named "Walk In the Trees" on the OST)

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
And here is the OST. It differs from the FYC in several ways: It contains a few film versions. It contains some alternates.
And it contains additional material not found on the FYC or heard in the film at all.
I will not be openly posting the link for the OST (which is in FLAC), Post here if you want it. Enjoy 🙂
Special thanks to Lockdown for sharing the OST with me in lossless 😀

Secondly, (wait for it) spectacular work with the included breakdowns. Just wow… I didn’t expect you to be so thorough. Genuinely outstanding stuff. I’d rep, like and 5-star this thread over and over if I could.
When I said this is my 2nd favorite film score of 2013, I meant it. I know it front-to-back. I listen to it a million times a week. It’s one of my all-time favorite scores. So when I was given the OST last week (and listened to it for the first time, up till now I’ve only been familiar with the FYC), I immediately noticed the differences. Its a shame cues like Sutter and Amy, Epitacular Then and It’s In the Air weren’t used in the film, because they’re such amazing pieces.
I’m so happy you went out of your way and gave this little gem such an extensive treatment. I feel horrible for even asking for it after getting this but could I also get a link to the OST? The idea of possibly getting a lossless upgrade for my 128 kbps (retouched but still artifact-riddled) soundcloud transcodes of the OST, especially "Sutter and Amy" and "Epictacular Then", is giving me palpitations. I know my reps are worthless (though hopefully I’ll find a way to contribute on here to change that) so all I can offer is virtual virtual bucketsful of them.
Since I made the cover… Might as well ask for the links… 😛
I mean I guess you can have the link……
Yes please, DAK! And how did I guess who did the cover for you…? Reminds me of something… 😉
I have my 3 go-to people for covers 😉

Honestly I did not go out of my way. Been wanting to do this edit for months now (just ask Lockdown). One of the reasons it took me so long was that I’ve been wanting to email Rob Simonsen himself (if I could even get through to him) and have the balls to request the FYC and OST in lossless – AND the slates. I got lucky coming across 2m15 on ASCAP. But I kept backing out, fearing he’d never reply or say no – which I know is only the worst that could happen, but still. Maybe I’ll ask him one day and go back and re-do it.
Oh and of course you can have the OST in lossless. It’s not like you’re asking me to give blood over here :p
May I have a links? 🙂
May I have a links? 🙂
Sent the complete and OST. Enjoy 🙂
Can I have the link please?
Thanks!
I would love a link, thank you.
please
Why are you trying to convert this to MP3 when it already is in MP3?
Unless you’re talking about the FLAC OST. If that’s the case, I don’t know.
Thanks for the share.
It’s certainly unique – but I wouldn’t list it as one of my top scores just yet. I need to listen to it more.

It’s not that good of a score. Is it Oscar worthy? Eh…not in my opinion. But A24 Films thought so, as they put an FYC together. It’s not the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard, either. It just really resonates with me. The film was alright (I have a thing for teenage coming-of-age films, don’t know why), but the score was way better. It puts me in a really good mood and makes me happy. I can’t explain it. You guys know what I’m talking about – music has that effect on all of us. Is that not why we’re here? I would give almost anything to tell Rob Simonsen in person what this score means to me and how much I love it.
please
Of course you can. Glad you liked what you heard.
Thanks a lot!
Haven’t watched the movie yet but I think I will.
Did you forget me 😉
Thanks in advance!
many thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance.
tia
thanks!
I’d like a link to your complete, but I have a question about "shortened some cues." Why would you shorten a cue? Do you mean as in just cutting out pauses or was actual music lost?
As in that’s how the cues are heard in the film. They’re extended on the FYC/OST
To save you sending me multiple PMs, I’ll also be posting requests for your Oblivion & Charlie & The Chocolate Factory complete edits.
Link(s) received – many thanks!
Thanks in advance 🙂
after two recommendations i had to look for it and found this thread. so if this is still available, complete & regular album, i’d like to receive the download links 🙂
tia
I must ask, were these personal recommendations? Or just posts you saw here in the thread?
I’d love a link, when you get a chance. 😀
