Two years after Rhino Records and TCM released the stunning 2-CD collection Collectors’ Gems From The M-G-M Films, which compiled 46 outtakes, rarities, alternate versions, and other such hard-to-find material from Judy’s tenure at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, they finally released a definitive single-disc compilation of performances from Judy’s entire film career, literally spanning from "The Texas Tornado" from her first feature-length film (Pigskin Parade) to three numbers from her last film. (I Could Go On Singing) In between, we get the obvious inclusions on such a collection – "Over The Rainbow," "The Trolley Song," "Get Happy," "The Man That Got Away," "Easter Parade," along with a few surprises such as "Little Drops Of Rain" from Gay Purr-ee, her only animated film voice role, and the deleted song "Last Night When We Were Young" from In The Good Old Summertime. My only quibble with this collection is that "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," a perennial Christmas classic introduced by Judy in Meet Me In St. Louis, is not to be found here. Rhino was smart not to create much overlap between this collection and Collectors’ Gems – the only song they have in common is "I’m Nobody’s Baby." And no, "Mack The Black" is not an overlap – the version on here is the version that appears in The Pirate, while the version that was included on Collectors’ Gems was an unused early version. Much like Collectors’ Gems, these are sourced from the original recording sessions (with the exception of the two songs from A Star Is Born, which were sourced from the film’s audio track and the soundtrack album master) and where multi-channel elements still existed, some tracks are even remixed in true stereo sound. Sound quality varies based on the condition of the recording session elements, but in general, everything sounds great when you remember that these recordings are anywhere from 50-80 years old. Ripped from my own CD. This amazing collection is out of print now, although used copies are fairly reasonably priced on the secondhand market. If you love Judy, or want to get into her, this is a vital collection of many of her most popular film songs.
