I made him a mod here because i knew he’d clean up the film score section and do what was needed to be done with it for a long time. It is in all honesty the largest part of this forum now and it needed cleaning up and maintaining.

I changed the thread title by the way because i really don’t feel insulting one of our staff members is the best way to bring about change of any kind, and just because you think we don’t care about what you have to say doesn’t give you the right to insult anyone here.

it was indeed long overdue, and as far as I can see Sparky does a VERY good job indeed.

If you want to define moderation as surveillance, it is up to you, of course, but everywhere where people come together they need to agree to a set of rules. AND people helping to keep those.
Someone actively moderating the way he does will do the place good.
Some might just have to adapt because they are not familiar with the structure.
Making USE of "power" is not automatically an ab-use.

Spark is a good choice, but that of course is only my opinion.

This thread is a load of crap, just because someone is whining about a mod who is doing their job. As far as I can tell, Sparky hasn’t been overly-strict. I think we’re all just used to doing whatever we like and it’ll take a while to get used to it. Maybe. Personally, I don’t think this is as big an issue as some here are making out. As long as Sparky isn’t being unreasonable, and as long as he gives warnings before closing threads, etc, I don’t see a problem.

All this trouble started in tapoktro’s Rogue Cut thread. Don’t bother looking for it, all the relevant posts have since been deleted.

maybe he named it that friendly in order to avoid a more aggressive word. Like for example, to add some descriptive terms in general: destructive, aggressive, hostile or flaming, he might have chosen a more neutral word, ever thought about that?

The tension here is certainly quite something these days.

Without getting into an argument over it again, I don’t have a problem with rules against profanity. I know there are younger folk here for whom it is inappropriate. But even that aside, it’s just nicer to use better language for all of us.

However, that being said, I don’t think it’s great for mods to edit members’ posts like that, and people should be free to express themselves to a certain degree. I guess it’s a fine line. Tbh, I think the best thing for the mods to do is to warn members when they use very explicit language and give them the chance to edit their own posts.

I’ve never seen a mod here moderate language before, so it’s a new experience for us all…

As was previously mentioned, it seems dumb to enforce use of "profanity" in posts where it had never mattered before, especially on a damn music piracy website on the free internet. Someone also pointed out that my sig at the time also featured profanity, but apparently that doesn’t count.

I really hate people who side with the management without thinking on their own, but oh well. I personally don’t agree with the way he’s handling business. It’s meddlesome and obnoxious and mostly unnecessary. But if you prefer to be treated like a child and do what you’re told, don’t let me stop you.

i prefer a different kind of language indeed, so it does make sense to me.
you do not agree with it: that is just as ok as agreeing is, agreeing or not agreeing does not even make him good or bad as a mod.
At some point I might do something or express myself a way that will make him intervene, I am willing to accept that, because I accept him as a mod.

I personally don’t appreciate or see the need for profanity. In 99.9% of instances, it can be replaced with appropriate language and still make the same point. I personally find filthy language/blasphemy offensive. If it’s a forum rule here, or someone in authority here doesn’t allow it, we, as regular members, ought to respect them and their wishes and learn the meaning of the word ‘synonym’. It’s really not that big of a deal.

Cluckyou – You’re the one who’s having to be treated like a child because of your behaviour, not us. If you abide by the basic, reasonable rules here, you don’t have to be treated like a child anymore. Simple as that.

I actually laughed when I read what Sparky wrote on your infraction notice. He has the right and authority to write what he wrote, and I don’t think it’s in the least bit unreasonable.

But i for one am glad that he started cleaning up among the threads because i’m tired of wading through tons of threads and posts looking for something specific and the only "useful" info being dead links. I also think it’s great that people contribute with mirrors or alternative formats, but i also wish they could contact a mod or the OP to get that info edited into the first post as well 🙂

Sorry that I don’t fit into your preconceived notions of how a functioning member of society should behave. I’ve seen a lot of bullshit on these forums that I’ve said nothing about. This time, I chose to speak up and make my point heard.

My use of profanity in the thread in question felt justified given the ridiculous amount of politics involved in whether or not someone could PM someone else and ask for a link. It was indicative of how frustrated I was becoming of the whole scene in general. Just skip the middle man and go straight to the source. I don’t agree with anyone’s decision to intervene and take my freedom of expression away from me.

You know what else I don’t agree with? Hypocrisy. And you don’t have to look back too far to see Sparky’s own track record. Just because he’s been labeled a "mod" now doesn’t forgive all his past transgressions in one fell swoop. He’s not a completely separate entity all of a sudden. And his decision to end his PM with "All the best, Final Fantasy Shrine Forums" is just rubbing salt in the wound. I very much doubt that his personal actions represent the entire community as a whole. But like I said, that’s just me.

I have to agree with Mr Gold again here. Really, he’s right. This thread is now (and kinda always was) pointless. Sparky is a mod, and nothing you can say here will change that. I think you’ve made yourselves quite clear enough that you hate his style of moderation. I think he’s now fully aware of it. Sarah is also aware of it. So that’s all there is to do. It’s not as if ranting over it will achieve anything more than it already has done – nothing.

Though I don’t know most of my co-workers in the Staff that well, the group doesn’t strike me as being comprised of folks which would abuse their powers, though if you want my personal opinion both as an individual and a moderator, I find that the Shrine could use badly more of an "Iron fist", as far as appliance of the rules is concerned, there’s a reason the situation is as bad as it is.

Profanity is fine when used in moderation, but if it’s starting to get overused in a heated debate then things tend to turn sour, everyone gets hostile and all shit breaks loose.
