MP3 is an okay lossy codec.
Some digital stores will use older MP3 encoders and will have more cut-off frequency.
And may have more compression artefacts.

AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) is much better at compressing audio.
It doesn’t cut off like MP3 can. Allows more bitrates, and it can use less bitrate than MP3 needs.

The MP3 picture shows about two different levels of cut-off where data is just trimmed down.
The AAC picture looks much better and more accurate to the original lossless file the digital stores use to convert (probably WAVs they get).

Any store that sells AAC is better for a lossy format.
Plus, a lot of hardware and software these days should be able to play AAC easily enough.

You really get more for your buck. 😉

be careful on such comments. qobuz offers aac as downloads, when you buy the lossless version.
while the aac encoding is done at 320kbps, the encoding is pretty crappy and even worse then their mp3 counterpart.

i can’t speak for a store like 7digital, who also offers aac at 320kbps. but i wouldn’t be surprised if the quality is on par with
qobuz’s aac.

best quality for lossy audio is hands down itunes. either buy your albums there or for a few dollars/euros more, buy them on stores that offer lossless or get the cd.

Yeesh. I read on HydrogenAudio forums that there are some really old, unoptimized code for AAC encoders out there.

Apple (iTunes/Quicktime) has one of the strongest encoding libraries for AAC encoding.
CoreAudioToolbox, is what free AAC encoder QAAC uses. Can’t live without it.
