Toy Story That Time Forgot a 20-minute short aired late in 2014 sports the return of Michael Giacchino to the series, who had previously scored Toy Story of Terror! the previous year. But whereas the latter short received a speedy iTunes release, this short received no soundtrack of any kind. Likewise, the short has yet to see a Region 1 release at all; I expect to see it hit home video in that region sometime in December.
However, it did receive a Region 2 release on DVD, and James P. Sullivan once again helped me out by providing me with the raw 5.1 AC3 file from his copy. Before you ask, yes, I did slow down the audio slightly to match NTSC speed (23.976 frames per second; PAL runs at 25 fps). He also made that great cover art you see up there!
Now, even though Sulley and I arent afraid of a brief sound effect or two in our music, I know some of you are real sticklers about not having them at all, so be warned: this does contain some sound effects. Is it worth your time then? Next to each track Ive given a brief description of the sound effects in each track, so you can decide but I highly recommend you give it a listen regardless!
This rip contains about 95% of the music in the short. The AC3 file was 384kbps, so I thought exporting to FLAC would be best. So that means that this isn’t true lossless.
Tracklist
1) The Terrifying Kittysaurus [brief effect 3.5 seconds in]
2) Masons House [no SFX]
3) Battlopolis [brief effect at 39 seconds; dialogue echo near the end of the track]
4) Reptillus Maximus [a couple brief voice echoes at 1:42 & 1:52]
5) The Arena of Woe [lots of cheering from 0:43 onward]
6) The Battle Begins [the worst track in terms of SFX]
7) You Got a Crayon? [some more cheering from 0:05 to 0:10]
8) The Cleric [chewing noises from 0:43 to 0:57; fan noises from 2:05 to 2:09]
9) Power Strip [weird sound design noise from 0:13 0:15; chanting from 0:26 to 0:32]
10) Glorious [brief dialogue echo from 0:22 to 0:26]
11) Be Grateful for Your Gifts [miscellaneous SFX from 0:02 to 0:07]
12) Credits [wind SFX near the end]

Now, that might look like a lot of sound effects at first, but believe me when I say that most of the music is clean. Dont let a few noises get in the way of enjoying another fun score from Giacchino.
Additionally, if you want the end credits uncut (albeit with more sound effects), you can get that here (https://mega.co.nz/#!qE0QWKBS!H6SmcCyI5Ex6iP2U_pBGzt6Mu9rV3udlqQXzwFW jY-c).
Also… if you happen to have the sessions to this short, PM Sulley or me… we might have something that could interest you in return.
Enjoy!
Toy Story of Terror aired Halloween 2013 and was released in the US in Halloween 2014. If Disney had chosen to release it also during Halloween 2013, not as many people might have tuned in to ABC to watch it.
I think the same thing is going on with this short; aired Christmas 2014, will be released Christmas 2015.
And maybe – just maybe – a soundtrack to go with it!
If I were to send you the original 5.1 tracks for the 3 Toy Story Toons… Would you be up to the challenge?
I have Toy Story of Terror! on Blu-Ray and it comes with all 3 shorts, I think in Lossless DTS-HD MA as well!

Yes, please! That would be awesome. I’m sure Skelly would be happy to have a shot at them. Right, Skelly?
TBH, I’m only asking because I found "Skelly"’s work on this to be quite freaking great! Sure the SFX and dialog echoes annoy the hell out of me in general when it comes to DVD Rips… but they’re so slight here that I can manage. I’m hoping he could do the same with the Toy Story Toons!
If he can send me the files, then I can see what can be done. 🙂
Glad you guys all like it!

*RUNS AND GRABS BLU-RAY TO BEGIN RIPPING*
If you can download a copy of the film with 5.1 audio and send me the audio file, I can work with that.
In short: I have no idea what to expect from those extra two rear channels.
Audacity (http://audacityteam.org/) is the greatest audio tool on the planet, especially when the FFMPEG and LAME MP3 plugins are installed.
Most films today are mixed in 5.1 surround sound (6 channels of audio – one center, two front, two rear, and one subwoofer), and often the dialogue and SFX are kept in the center and front channels, leaving the rear channel with mostly clean music. Now, keep it mind this varies from film to film, there’s no standard for how to mix a film, but with a little luck you might find that your favorite film has a 5.1 mix with the music isolated in the rear.

OK. I have a few questions. First, how do I open DVD in Audacity.
I think there’s already been a couple of threads. But you’re more than welcome to make another one! Make the definitive one!

You don’t. You need a program to rip the DVD. You also need to get past copy encryption. You then have to extract the audio.
Then you can open that in Audacity.

Another note of interest is the extra composer credit for this score that was also listed. Composer Kathryn Datzman (Who works with Giacchino quite often) also worked on this score.
I know it’s a little early for this…
