What it is:
This is a direct line-out recording of all the music currently available in the Squid Beatz mini game, unlocked by completing the squid amiibo’s challenges. Said mini game allows you to listen to select tracks from the game on their own, or activate visual cues to play along with the beat by pressing the D-pad or face buttons on the Gamepad (the music is played through the TV while percussive sounds are played through the Gamepad when buttons are pressed). This provides clean, sound effect free playback of the available tracks.
What it is not:
A complete soundtrack for the game. There are several tracks that are not included in this mini game including the tutorial stage music, the Inkopolis hub world music, the final checkpoint music for the singleplayer campaign, and many variations of the tracks that have multiple audio layers such as the boss theme, the various store themes, Octo Valley as you clear each section, and some singleplayer tracks as you approach enemies. At this time, it is also not a complete rip of Squid Beatz, since tracks 20 through 22 are currently grayed out and won’t play.

How it was recorded:
I don’t know if anyone would be interested in these details, but I figure I’ll include them anyway. Audio was recorded by directly connecting the audio cables from my Wii U to the line-in jack on my Sound Blaster X-Fi via 1/8" to RCA stereo cable and a pair of RCA female couplers. Initial recording was performed in Audacity with each track playing about two and a half times, unless they don’t loop (Last Minute and Credits). Tracks were then amplified uniformly to keep their volume levels the same relative to each other, while increasing the overall volume. Recordings were exported as WAV and imported into FL Studio to trim excess audio and add fades (15 seconds for most tracks, 10 seconds for shorter tracks like Victory and Defeat). No additional processing was done. Faded out tracks were brought back to Audacity to export as FLAC and MP3.
And that’s it! It may not be the game’s entire soundtrack, but I hope people enjoy it for what it is.
EDIT: If you’re looking for the full soundtrack, there’s a direct conversion of the game’s music files at Thread 190541
I totally hope they will make some SQUID SISTERS merchandise, like single, whole album and stuff, I would buy them without blinkin’ an eye. They have so much potential – Nintendo’s own Hatsune Miku 😀
Do we know what the three unavailable tracks are going to be? Or is it just guesses at the moment? The tutorial theme would be really nice.
Also, no-one has attempted any album art for this? For shame.
GlassButterflies – Thanks for the props on the quality! That was my main goal with this rip since other rips, while more complete, still had sound effects during the introductions to the multiplayer tracks, during the boss music, etc. As for the three missing tracks, everything I’ve heard says they’ll be for the Splatfest event, first starting on June 20th.
Lefance – I was starting to wonder which tracks you felt were the best if they weren’t included in here! I’m glad you found the ones you like, though.
In the meantime, they managed to extract the music files from the game, so you can probably find them in there – Thread 190541
