TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY – Complete Remastered MGM Sound Track – Music of Jerome Kern

TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY was a 1946 mostly fictional musical biography based on the life and music of Jerome Kern. Almost every great musical star on the MGM lot at the time was featured in the musical sequences, many of which are among the finest both musically and visually ever produced at the studio. Not all of the songs planned and recorded made their way into the finished picture and MGM/UA included some pre-recordings of variable sound on the analogue track of their laserdisc box set of the film. Most collectors assume the original optical pre-recording sessions from TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY are damaged or lost and the lack of an acceptable master (and/or perhaps other obstacles) has prevented an expanded commercial release from Rhino/TCM of this fabulous soundtrack. This expanded edition is from a different source than previous versions. I believe this is the most complete album of TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY ever compiled.. It features all of the material on the laserdisc including outtake musical numbers from a combination of acetates of pre-recordings and some optical final mixes as well. Some of the songs were more complete versions than were used in the final picture but in sections that had to be put back together to form a complete number, including the complete Judy Garland “Sunny/Who” musical sequence as originally conceived, but cut in the final film, a full 8 minutes long. The sound quality of the acetates differed from side to side making it impossible to perfectly match the segments even with all the professional tools at my disposal but, in my opinion, this soundtrack is so musically brilliant and of such historical importance that it should be able to be heard complete, warts and all. I did the best I could and I think you will find this remastering very satisfying from a purely musical standpoint. Again I ask that, out of respect for the artists, that this download be used only for your personal enjoyment. The sound is more than acceptable from an historical prospective keeping in mind that we shall never again hear the like of these great artists performing the music of the man who many believe arguably to be the greatest Musical Theatre composer of the 20th Century.
