The Singing Nun was one of the biggest box office hits of 1966. Debbie Reynolds was at the peak of her career and Harry Sukman adapted and tailored specifically for Reynolds’ voice the wonderful folk melodies of the Belgian Nun Jeanne Deckers, (who became internationally famous in 1963 as Soeur Sourire when she scored a hit with the song "Dominique" and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show). The Singing Nun soundtrack album was released on the MGM Records label at the time of the film’s theatrical release but has been out of print in all formats since the 1980s. It has never been released on CD. Fortunately the album was released on an Ampex stereo reel to reel tape which I transferred to the digital format and remastered a few years ago. Although the sound is quite good the album suffers from the excessive reverb that was added to soundtrack albums of the period, which I was unable to minimize without severely reducing the stereo spread, which I concluded was more important to preserve (this may have also been an attempt to duplicate the sound of the original Singing Nun recordings, which had a lot of reverb). The English lyrics are by Randy Sparks and are not always exact translations of the original songs, but Debbie Reynolds’ vocal performances are truly special and she makes the songs her own.
