These British stop-motion animated short films from the early 90’s are among my all-time favourite short films (actually, films in general). All three films have the rare 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and are praised around the world for their brilliant stories, stunning animation, and cracking British humour. They are an invaluable part of my childhood memories and I cannot recommend them enough. If you haven’t seen them yet, go and look them up. You will not regret it.
The music for all three shorts (and subsequent films) was composed by British film composer Julian Nott and is one of the essential parts of each film. Unfortunately, as is often the case with short films, the soundtracks never got an official release. However, from what I’ve heard, there is a promo score for each film floating around somewhere here. A while ago, Scoreman shared a 7-track promo with six tracks from A Close Shave and one track from The Wrong Trousers. They are on YouTube here (https://www.youtube.com/user/afewtunes/videos). When asked, Scoreman said he had the actual promos for each film, but he never got round to sharing them. Since then, he has stopped sharing anything here for various reasons.
Because of that, I’m starting this thread to track them down once and for all.
Does anyone here have them?
Please, please, please let me know.
Yes, anything anyone can provide regarding these scores would be appreciated!

Hey, I was a kid! :p
Honestly though, I never paid attention to dialogue at that age…
If so, maybe – just maybe – I could isolate the music.

If the promos don’t turn up, please do look into it!! But damn it, Scoreman did apparently have them (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/wallace-gromit-close-shave-promo-40513/#post812944). Surely he can’t have been the only person here who had them?!
The promos in Youtube really surprised me, quite majestic for what it is.
Unfortunately, there’s no chance of that happening. I’ve been in PM contact with him recently, and at first he said he’d look out for them for me, but then when I asked him again to see if he’d found them, he said that he is no longer sharing anything with anyone here. He didn’t even say if he’d found them yet or not. I asked him again for a private share by email, but I’ve had no response. That’s why I started this thread.
It is indeed fantastic quality music. Absolutely top-notch stuff.
I’ll put them to the list..
The last two ("Were Rabbit" and "Loaf and Death") are rubbish compared to the original three. Sadly, the humour really went downhill.
I’ve just finished watching A Grand Day Out. Such memories. You notice something more every time. 🙂

Before watching, I emailed Julian Nott using the direct address on his website. We’ll have to wait and see if I get a response…

I own the DVDs and they’re in 5.1, but I’ve not checked it out as to the ability to get the music listenable without any intrusive dialogue.

IT’S NOT JUST ME!!!! 😀
Would you be able to rip the audio and send it to me? If you don’t know how, I can PM you some easy directions.
I think the best thing to do rips of is the american blu-ray which has LCPM 5.1. It’ll be better than a lossy 5.1 that it’s a bit old!
I don’t watch that much TV regularly… very little of it appeals to me. And I don’t have time to see the shows I might be interested in at the times they actually air.
Plus, if you’re going to stare at a box, what would you rather be looking at: a cozy little tube like Sulley’s, or this monstrosity ()?
I can’t find a torrent or anything with the LPCM audio (it might be private trackers, though), so I figured I’d try my luck and see if I could get it or at least an AC3 copy through this thread… hopefully CGCJ can help out with that! 🙂
Though if anyone has the Blu-ray, please contact me!
I’m not referring to the quality of the TV, I’m talking about the immense size.
But anyway… back on topic…

In all honesty, yes, we are dirt poor. My mum can’t work, due to the government taking percentages off my sisters’ uni loans, and what my dad earns is never enough to pay off all our bills and mortgage. We are nearly constantly in the red, only going back to black at the beginning of each month when my dad gets paid. So we can’t afford to just ‘get a new TV’ even if it’s ‘only’ 100, when our old one still works well. That’s also the reason I still can’t drive – the insurance here is just too expensive.
Sorry, but you did ask. :p

I literally don’t watch TV at all. None of us do, unless there’s something very interesting (a history documentary or something) that we will then record and watch later. But that doesn’t happen often.
I must confess, that monstrosity does look tempting! But only if I had a spare room to put it in. What’d I’d ideally like is a large flatscreen that folds down from the ceiling whenever you want to use it, and folds back up whenever you don’t. That would be awesome.
He seems quite friendly, so I’ve replied asking more questions about copyright/release issues. I’ll let you know what he says if he replies again. I think he might.
I’m uploading the 5.1 audio to mega now. I eagerly await what you’ll be able to get out of it!
Edit: Do you want The Curse of the Were-Rabbit also, or, as that is an actual feature-length film, it has its own soundtrack release? (I’ve not searched up about it.)
Yeah, from what I’ve heard, Julian is a nice bloke. There’s always hoping I can inspire him to push for a release of some sort. We shall have to wait and see.
That’s a shame you never got a reply. There are a couple of reasons. A) the email address wasn’t a direct, personal one, and therefore probably went to his agent/secretary. B) he was too busy to reply. C) he’s just a jerk.
I think perhaps your email was a bit too… rambling? It’s a bit long. I always try to keep my emails short and sweet when writing to official people. That way, it’s more likely they will feel they can spare the time to reply. My email to Julian, for example, was only about 4 lines long. The other factor to consider is how ‘big’ the composer is. I have a feeling Mr Wagner is more well-known than Mr Nott, and is therefore more likely to have a secretary. Julian, on the other hand, provided a direct email address on his website for personal contact.

If you could rip Were-Rabbit too that’d be nice, if you can manage it.

Yeah, luckily the effects are mostly contained in the dialogue track. Hopefully it is like that for all of them. (I’m taking the audio from "The Complete Collection" DVD which includes all, including A Matter of Loaf and Deaf)
Sure, I’ll get you the audio from The Curse of the Were-Rabbit too.
Oh good! That’s definitely one of the highlights of the films and the music! The promo track isn’t complete – only starting when Wallace steps onto the train. The actual cue starts when Feathers jumps onto the banister and Gromit follows him.
Fun fact: I’m currently working on a string quartet arrangement of the full Train Chase cue. 🙂
Yeah, that’s what I was referring to, with the unreleased first 35 seconds of the cue being mostly clean, except for the aforementioned sounds. (I can upload my quick edit of the cue if you want)
Hell, why not?! Let’s give it a listen. Skelly can still try to remove what little FX there is just in case anyway. Right, Skelly?
I can try, but no promises! It all depends on how everything is mixed…
I have the 7-track promo, with the train chase track. Not sure exactly what the quality is, but I’ve been happy with it myself. Would you like me to upload it here?
Yes please, as after a quick search, all I could find was mentions on forums and the YouTube uploads.
Ok, sure. I’ve just checked – it’s 192k.

Your edit is good, but the pitch of the rip needs to be raised by half a semitone to match the promo.
Once you’re done, will you make a new thread or post them here?
That’s so exciting!! I can’t wait to have a listen! Let me know before you make the thread. I’ve already done several versions of artwork for A Grand Day Out, and I’ll be working on matching covers for the other two as well. 🙂

Don’t do HDLossless’s job for him!
The AC3 files are 448kbps, but I figure the sound difference is so small human hearing wouldn’t detect the difference between a FLAC export or a VBR MP3.
Besides, the material sounds very dated anyway at some points… FLAC would only be worth it if I were provided with the LPCM on the Blu-ray. And even then there might not be too much of a difference since, like I said, the material is a little dated…
Glad you guys like it!!
———- Post added at 02:45 PM ———- Previous post was at 02:41 PM ———-
And to go with your sneak preview, here’s a sneak peak at one of my covers:
The file I provided is not 237 kbps – that’s just the average bitrate. In truth the bitrate fluctuates every second to fit the need of the music. If there’s a point of silence in the track, then it’ll be about 2kbps at that very point. If the music is very bombastic, then it’s very possible that the music for that point could be 320kbps.
Here’s the spectograms of a track at CBR and VBR-0:
They look exactly the same. Probably sound exactly the same too, unless you have unparalleled hearing and pick pick up on the slight artifacts left out of the VBR transcode.

Ooh… nice cover, Sulley.

Glad you like it. I’ve got a lot more. 😉
It’s on a russian torrent site, needs you to register (I already am, ages ago) and it’s a BDCustom of the original one (because they added the russian audios) but so far the LPCM 5.1 seems to be intact.
I wanna download it!
What’s stopping you?!
I’m not sure I understand how this makes it better though – how’s it better than the format Skelly’s working with?
I’m not sure I understand how this makes it better though – how’s it better than the format Skelly’s working with?
Presumably it’ll just have the same audio mix, but at a higher bitrate/quality…?
Well, laying the lossless part aside, it should bring more quality and a lot of difference, comparing it with the dated lossy DVD. I’m sure it’s gonna bring something more than "lossless" and has more quality and maybe even more spacity.
If your PC survives the download, it’d be interesting comparing the two. 🙂
I’m off to bed now… Night all! I will sleep well knowing my dream is in capable hands…
Oooo, that’s great, Ponyo. 😀
I expect that everything’s mixed the same, just in higher quality.
If it ever finishes downloading, I’d appreciate it if you could extract the audio for me! Just PM me and I’ll explain how…
In the meantime I’ll keep chugging away at what I’ve started, just to see how everything else is mixed…
Anyway – are you using a PC or a Mac?
Anyway – are you using a PC or a Mac?
I think Ponyo uses a PC…
– In the folder eac3to is downloaded to, hold ‘SHIFT’ and right click. Click the option that says something like "open command window here".
– in the command prompt window that opens, type:
eac3to [drag-and-drop a Wallace and Gromit video file here] -demux
I think that should work (by the way – don’t include the brackets in the code). It should produce a WAV file and a video file of some kind. What it does it it takes the video file and takes it apart without converting anything. Therefore, no quality is lost in the process.
Let me know if it doesn’t work and I’ll figure something else out…
I figured as much after listening to the 5.1 Train Chase. Still, it would appear to be better than most feature length movies. How far have you got with A Grand Day Out?
So far I’ve only encountered one instance where I had to bounce around the front and rear channels, and that’s when the rocket is taking off.
Yeah, most films funnel all the dialogue through all the channels. It’s meaningless and detracts from the overall sound experience… I’m glad that most TV shows and smaller films eschew this silly practice.
It’s not the case with all short films – I extracted the 5.1 channels of several Pixar shorts and they are a complete mess. FX splattered across all channels.
It’s not the case with all short films – I extracted the 5.1 channels of several Pixar shorts and they are a complete mess. FX splattered across all channels.
I’ll definitely finish it up by the end of the day.
When it comes to sound mixes, I think it depends on how much the director/showrunner is interested in the sound mix. If the director doesn’t care that much, I guess then the sound mixer does a quick job of music isolated of the rear channels, dialogue and sfx only in the center, and mixing and matching in the front channels.
If the director is interested, then you’re more likely to get a lot of rear activity.
So it makes sense that the Pixar shorts would have lots of effects all over the place. They tend to take advantage of technological improvements and would probably want to utilize the 5.1 audio to the fullest extent. Which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s painfully obvious when SFX and dialogue are distributed aimlessly through it all…
Thanks so much for doing this for me/us! Can’t wait for this evening…
It’s probably because the 2.0 mix is the original mix, whereas the 5.1 mix is more modern, and the mixers used the original sound elements in their highest quality for the new surround mix… which would explain why the 2.0 would sound more grainy.
Have you gotten a chance to see if my eac3to code works?
That probably means that the file automatically started playing once it was done demuxing… can you try searching your files for the WAV file? It’s probably in the same folder as the BDMV file…
Why can’t I just use MakeMKV and extract the audio from the MKV?
Huh… weird…
Yeah, MakeMKV can work too. I just thought eac3to would be easier. Do you know how you’re going to extract the audio? Through Audacity, right?
I wonder if the Blu-ray and DVD mixes are the same…
(Go and watch the beginning of A Grand Day Out!)
Yeah, you guys need more to do. :p
Ponyo – PM me the links when you’re finished extracting everything. MEGA would be awesome.
Neither was I. But from what you said, you made it sound like it was either cheese and crackers OR a cup of tea, not both. 😉
For "filename", type out the FULL FILEPATH for where you would want the FLAC file to go. Something like "C:\\Users\Ponyo\Desktop\Wallace.flac". See if that works…
Jk. Take as long as you need. 😉

The work you guys have put into this is nothing short of amazing! Please, keep going :D.
Audio came from the bluray release – I can upload rest if folk want them to tidy up / split into tracks etc.
I’m nearly done with A Grand Day Out; expect it some time tomorrow in this thread. The cue for when they first takeoff is kind of damaged at the beginning, and it’s less obvious in the DVD AC3 audio, so I need to spend some time seamlessly combining the AC3 and PCM.
I’ll make a new thread in the downloads section when I’ve done all four adventures, and maybe Were-Rabbit too if that’s mixed in a way that I can work with… my spider-sense tells me that The Wrong Trousers especially will be a pain in the butt to do based on what I’ve skimmed through, but we’ll see how it all turns out!

YES YES YES!!! I can’t wait to listen to this!!!! 😀 😀 😀
(Sorry, am I overreacting?)
No, hearing the music on its own was pretty exciting for me too, especially since I’d listened to it so many times as a kid. Even though I never paid it much attention to it then, I essentially memorized it…
It sounds absolutely fantastic!!
Can I make some suggestions for track names / divisions?
If it’s not too much to ask, could you possibly split some of your tracks to make the following cue list?
1. A Grand Day Out – Main Title
2. Magazines
3. Cheese Holidays
4. The Moon
5. Building the Rocket
6. Job Well Done
7. Lighting the Fuse
8. Crackers!
9. Liftoff
10. The Surface (I think you forgot this one – it’s a couple of seconds of strings as they walk out of the rocket.)
11. Picnic on the Moon
12. The Cooker
13. Clearing Up
14. Cooker’s Dream
15. Cooker Attack
16. Cooker’s Dream [Reprise]
17. Stowaway / The Fuse! / Blast Off
18. Sad Cooker
19. Homemade Skis
20. End Credits
That would be fantastic! Also, stand by for the full set of covers…
Because, to my ears, that was most likely how the cues were written. I think what Skelly’s done is good in combining them so that there aren’t loads of tiny cues, but I’d prefer to have it as I think it was originally done. If you go back through the film (like I just did), you’ll see what I mean.
What Skelly’s done is kind of what I’d expect of an official release – combining cues to make longer tracks. What I’m looking for is the equivalent ‘sessions’. See what I mean?

So, cues have been combined, meaning that TheSkeletonMan’s edit is not how the music is presented in the short?
That doesn’t sound familiar… I bet I left it out, yeah. Nice tracklist, I’ll update it accordingly.

Not exactly. I took very short music cues and put them before or after longer ones, since some people might not appreciate having 4-second tracks… but Sulley’s edit suggestion is a good idea.

Skelly’s rips are coming along nicely, but I’ve been warned that A Close Shave is proving a lot more difficult than the first two. The Wrong Trousers, however, is an absolute treat. You can seriously look forward to that. 😉
I Will Have to Look For A Link To Were-Rabbit
Ta!
That’s great to know! For A Close Shave, at-least we have that selection of tracks, and The Wrong Trousers has to be my favourite of the three original shorts, so I’m very much looking forward to it. Thanks for the update!
Exactly. So it’s not too bad.
And me too, The Wrong Trousers has to be my favourite. I literally can’t fault it for anything!
But I’m just about to hit the sack. Night all!
Yeah, head’s up, guys: A Close Shave is not going to be impressive. I might not even be able to extract anything from it. At least we have the promo, though.
A Matter of Loaf and Death is all right though…
But The Wrong Trousers is almost SFX-less! Quite a treat! I hope to have the thread up sometime this week, so keep your eyes peeled!
The pieces that were removed are "Happy Talk" from the musical South Pacific and "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?", along with Wallace’s humming of it the subsequent morning.
So maybe, if I can find them, I’ll include the tracks as bonus material… 😀
You could stick them in the chronological place before "Farewell, Gromit". Speaking of which, I was thinking perhaps you could change that cue title to "Farewell, Gromit/The Plan Begins" or something like that, as it continues after Gromit’s left the house and Feathers gets the Electronics for Dogs book and the drill to modify the trousers.
Can you rip it from this?
Wallace and Gromit – The Wrong Trousers | Trke Altyaz? – Dailymotion video (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xog56h_wallace-and-gromit-the-wrong-trousers-turkce-altyazi_shortfilms)

So, originally, the songs played on Feathers’ radio are as follows:
"Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree" (written by Irwin Levine) – played when Gromit is in bed and pulls the blanket over his head.
"Happy Talk" (written by Rodgers & Hammerstein) – played when Gromit is lying on the sofa.
"How Much is That Doggie in the Window?" (written by Bob Merrill) – played when Gromit is outside trying to sleep in his doghouse.
Anything from Wallce & Gromit???
Or is it the same source that the promo we already have is from?

Wallace and Gromit – The Wrong Trousers
Train Chase
Oh, and just to make sure, what’s the track length of Train Chase?
Can you upload it some time? 🙂
I think this might be better quality…
Skelly, did you get the link to The Wrong Trousers I posted on the previous page? Hopefully you can rip the radio songs off that.
HEY! 😡

Yeah, I’ll try. If anyone else has any info on the radio songs that’d be a big help!
They are – but I’ve not found an AC3 file for that first pressing. Just for the re-releases. 🙁
Damn you, autocorrect!!! I edited it as fast as possible. :p
I’d actually be really interested in hearing his other works. Can you upload whole promo?

HEY! 😡
I’m so sorry!! Totally unintentional, I can assure you!!
That’s the same. Ah well. Wonder why they split it??
Great to hear a good progression skelly. Really looking forward.
@lockdown i two would be interested as he composes some wonderful and calming music.
@sulley
Are you making artwork for the other shorts and the film?
I can’t get over the quality of all the W&G scores, particularly the early ones.
Sadly, that’ll be next to impossible to extract clean. Lots of hooves from the sheep.
Sorrryyyyyy…. I was hoping for that cue too. 🙁
Why hasn’t anyone thought to give these scores a proper release yet?
Isn’t that the question of the century?!

I’m gonna try contacting Aardman. Long shot, but you don’t know till you try.
Julian didn’t get back to me after that initial contact I had, so I guess it’s no use emailing him again.

If you can add this to the new thread, Skelly, that’d be great.
Also, you could add to the requests section the missing cues from A Close Shave. That’s what I’m most wanting!!
I think I covered the Close Shave cues in my first request… right?
I think I covered the Close Shave cues in my first request… right?
Well, I guess technically, yes, you did. But we have all the material from all the shorts except Close Shave from DVD rips.
Just uploading six Loaf and Death covers now. I’ve changed the logo on that first one I just did to the white-rimmed one. It seems to work better.
