Howard Keel was the John Wayne, Errol Flynn and Clark Gable of movie musicals. With his barrel-chested swagger and cocky, confident air, not to mention his lusty handsomeness and obvious athleticism, the 6′ 3" brawny baritone had MGM’s finest songbirds swooning helplessly for over a decade in what would be the finest musicals cinema ever produced.
In 1946, Oscar Hammerstein "discovered" Keel during John Raitt’s understudy auditions for the role of Billy Bigelow in Broadway’s "Carousel." He was cast on sight and the die was cast. Howard managed to understudy Alfred Drake as Curly in "Oklahoma! as well, and in 1947 took over the rustic lead with great success to London. MGM, looking for an answer to Warner Bros. Gordon MacRae, signed and showcased him in many of MGM’s finest extravaganzas, with such classics as Annie Get Your Gun (1950), Show Boat (1951), Kiss Me Kate (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) [his favorite] and, on loan out to WB, Calamity Jane (1953) at the top of the list. Kismet (1955) opposite Ann Blyth would be Howard’s last as the passion for movie musicals ran its course.
He became an unexpected TV household name when he replaced the late Jim Davis as the upstanding family patriarch of the nighttime soap drama "Dallas" (1978). As a result of this renewed fame, Keel landed his first solo recording contract with "And I Love You So" in 1983. In later years he continued to appear in concerts. Howard Keel died in 2004 of colon cancer, survived by his third wife, three daughters and one son.

Surprisingly, Rhino (or any other label) have never issued a legitimate tribute album of Keel’s soundtrack vocals. I remastered this collection in 2007 from fairly pristine sources and the DSD processing preserves the original analog sound, very important for a voice with power and warmth like Keel’s. Included in this collection are a couple of extended and/or outtakes from MGM’s 1951 Show Boat missing from Rhino’s soundtrack CD. Enclosed is a download link so you can enjoy one of Musical Theater and Film Musical’s greatest singers at his peak.
