DMG Sound is a series of soundtracks and compilation albums ripped from real DMG-01 hardware (the original Game Boy model), many for the first time ever. It’s much better than emulation! Enjoy, and Play It Loud!
I will always consider requests, but please keep in mind that I already have a lot on my plate as it is.
Extra Information:
I’ve found that most, if not all, existing Game Boy rips floating around out there are ripped via emulators or GBS players. I understand that it’s easier and often cleaner than doing it from the real thing, but most of these rips are full of inaccuracies compared to the real hardware. I’ve been listening to Game Boy music on my real system for a while now, and it always sounds so much better than every rip I download. I figured I should share it with everyone else.
For those that don’t know, "DMG-01" is the model number of the very first Game Boy. It’s my opinion that the DMG’s sound chip is superior to every subsequent Game Boy ever released. There’s a great comparison of all the models here (http://www.herbertweixelbaum.com/comparison.htm).
These rips come after the compilation test album I released a while ago (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/dmg-sound-compilation-test-album-game-boy-183005) to check for interest in this project. It received a TON of positive feedback. A couple people even started PMing me with encouragement and requests for me to release more stuff already, so I’ve decided to move forward with releasing my work. I was hoping to complete more soundtracks so I could burst out of the gate with a meatier starting lineup, but life obligations have severely limited the time I can dedicate to this project. I figured I shouldn’t keep everyone waiting any longer. I do plan on ripping more, so sit tight.
I’ll keep this thread updated with future releases and progress on current rips.
A few important bits about these releases:
– All looping songs loop once (as in, they play through twice) and then fade out.
– Track titles are taken from official sources if available. Otherwise, fan titles or my own are used.
– Release years are taken from the first region to receive each game (usually Japan).
– Game Boy Color-only soundtracks are indeed recorded on the DMG-01, just like the rest. I have a method of playing extracted sound data from GBC games on any Game Boy model. I’ve done testing and discerned that there are no differences in tempo, pitch, etc. between the DMG and CGB, so it’s a straight upgrade in sound quality over the whiny, noisy, low-bass GBC hardware. To my knowledge, there are no other existing rips of GBC music from a DMG system, so this is likely the first time these tracks are getting this treatment!
– Some tracks exhibit small "popping" noises, most prominently in Metroid II. This is not a bad rip, a bad conversion, or bad hardware; this is just how they naturally sound on the real thing. I’ve done a lot of testing to verify as such. Emulated rips don’t have these pops because the GB sound chip isn’t emulated 100% correctly. I’ve chosen not to try and remove or dampen the "pops" in an effort to preserve the original sound. Most later-released games have cleaner sound; I think the composers learned how to handle the hardware better over time.
Don’t hesitate to point out any mistakes that might have slipped into the releases. I’ve manually recorded and processed a lot of music, and there could always be things that I missed accidentally. I hope you enjoy them, and again, Play It Loud!

Yep, those are in my queue. Pretty much any game featured in the compilations is already in line for a full rip. It just takes time, which I don’t have a lot of these days.
Hope everyone enjoys what I have done so far, though. Shantae is next!
Looking forward to maybe Pokemon GSC, Donkey Kong Land, Kirby 1, and the Zelda games some day maybe

Definitely doing GSC; it’s one of my favorites. It’s just a pretty big soundtrack, so it’ll take some time. For the time being, there are some great snippets of it in the compilation albums.
Curious why the Pokemon release is in mono (I think? Unless I’m really bad a detecting the stereo here) and not the Stereo "Earphone 1" option from Yellow version?
I prefer the mono version. The music was composed to be in mono. The stereo options from Yellow and G/S/C simply separate the sound channels in various ways, which doesn’t really do anything for the music. It just puts entire channels on the left or right, and at least for me it’s kind of painful to listen to over headphones since the sound is really unbalanced that way. (Ironic, considering it’s an "earphone" setting.)
I do have working copies of the stereo sound data from Yellow and G/S/C that I can record from, but it would require an entire second recording session to produce a stereo version. If enough people want it, I may do it at some point. I’d like to get other games out of the way first, though; I have quite a few that I want to do before I start doing requests.
I convert GBS files (ripped GB sound data) into ROMs that play back the music using a program called GBS2GB. I load them onto my Everdrive-GB and record them from my Game Boy plugged into my sound card via 3.5mm cable. Pretty simple setup, though it wasn’t possible until the recent Everdrive came out since the converted GBS ROMs didn’t play nice with the crappy Chinese flashcarts that used to dominate the market.
However, there is the occasional GBS that isn’t ripped correctly, and when converted it causes broken music or broken ROMs. In these cases, I’ve had to record from the actual game. Annoyingly, it usually ends up being tracks toward the end of the data like credits themes or multiplayer tracks. So I’ve had to beat a couple games myself and dig out the old link cable, a second system, and another copy of the game. That’s happened with Tetris, Super Mario Land, and Metroid II so far. Tetris Attack is partially broken at the end too, so I’ve been working on a way around it.
Anyway, I record a song in Goldwave for a while so I can listen for when the music loops, then I clip off feedback from the start and fade out the end if necessary. Save as WAV then batch-convert to FLAC and MP3 when I’m ready to release. Then it’s just figuring out titles, album order, artists, etc.
Would it be okay if you can please upload the soundtracks to Game & Watch Gallery 2 and Game & Watch Gallery 3?
They’re not fully ripped yet. Soon, though! I love G&WG’s music.
Since you have an Everdrive, I believe it’s possible to download saves (SRAM saves from emulators; not save states), rename them to match the ROM name of the game, put them on the SD card and it should load the save when you boot up the rom AFAIK. Could be a nice shortcut. Game Genie codes are apparently supported too in the Everdrive-GB so there might be codes to jump around to certain points in the game.
I did actually do that with Metroid II. But Super Mario Land doesn’t have save games, so I had to do a run-through of it myself for the credits theme, lol. For Tetris, I was just missing the multiplayer stuff so I simply played some games against myself using my real copy.
I actually don’t know if EDGB supports GG, but I do have a program that can hard-patch GG codes into ROMs anyway so it’s a moot point. I guess I just hadn’t considered that route before for music-ripping. Thanks.
SAME
Can you do Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories for GBC? I can’t find the music anywhere!
A GBS for it exists, so it’s probably possible. I would need a lot of help with tagging and tracklist organization, though, because I’ve not played that game and apparently an existing rip/soundtrack doesn’t exist.
Once I get done with my existing personal queue and move on to requests and games I haven’t personally played, I’ll probably need to enlist the help of others to tag and sort my rips. That’s a ways off, though.
Do you think you can do the soundtracks to Tetris Attack (GB) and Donkey Kong ’94 (GB)?
Yes and yes. Already in my queue. In fact, I just investigated how I was going to rip Tetris Attack the other day (since the last couple songs in my converted data are corrupt), and I found out that they’re easy enough to just rip from the actual game since no sound effects play over them. I’ll be needing to beat the game on hard mode myself to obtain the credits theme. Not a problem, though, because I’m good enough at Panel de Pon to take on Bowser. B]
BTW just so you know, the sound can be much improved by using nearly ANY audio interface instead of your sound card. The results you’re getting so far are way superior to emulation still, though.
Do you have any suggestions for a cheap one? I’ve never used one before.
Also, are there any examples of quality difference between using an interface and not? (Though I can’t listen right this moment since I’m at work.)
I do! I have a Super Game Boy 2, in fact, which fixes the speed/pitch issues from the first one. However, I can’t get clean recordings from my Super Famicom. There’s a lot of background noise. If I could get my hands on an SNES that had better sound, I’d love to record the SGB soundtracks for the few games that supported them. Especially since I’m almost entirely sure that nobody else has ever done that.
If you could get you hands on an SNES that had better sound,
can you record some snes game music? like sunper robot wars? Thanks
can you record some snes game music? like sunper robot wars? Thanks
There’s already a guy here (Thread 174131) who does hardware SNES rips with a modded SNES. You’re better off asking him.
Yep, they’re in my queue.
Are you still working on Shantae? These rips are freaking amazing, and I was just curious if I should wait or if i should go find another rip. Anyway, keep up the amazing work!
Yes, I am! That’s going to be out soon. I just need to find another night where I’m not busy with something else. This has been a rather busy summer for me so far.
Gonna do the Castlevania games on Gameboy? Or any of the SaGa games?
Potentially, though I’ve never played those games so I’d probably need assistance tagging and arranging the songs. I have many other games in the queue before those, though.
Oh well, we all have lives, that kind of stuff comes first. Thanks for the current rips anyway!
Also, please remember to add all of the songs, including the Super Game Boy version of the Credits theme.

Just a heads up
My free time is finally opening back up, though, so I’m gonna return to ripping songs soon™. The Shantae rip is already more than half done so that’ll still be next, and then I’ll move along with my other planned games. I wanted to do it in secret and then reappear heroically with a bunch of content, but the messages have been piling up and I should really say something to confirm that I’m not dead.
Oh, and just an FYI that may make recording easier, in the original Shantae there is a debug mode with a hidden music player.

Just a heads up
Thanks for the tip, but I can’t use any music players that play in GBC mode since I’m recording from a regular DMG. No worries, though, because my sound data rip of Shantae appears to play flawlessly on DMG.
(Unlike Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, whose sound data is an absolute fucking mess and I’m probably going to need help identifying and tagging the songs in there that DO work. But I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.)
I do, however, suggest you one thing: use the DMG only for DMG or DMG compatible color games and not GBC-only games (as Shantae is).
A lot of the music for Game Boy Color games was written using GBC hardware that is slightly different, mostly because of the lack of the VIn pin that allowed for extra sound (although I have no idea what games use it) and the cloning of the sound chip that was not quite right (just like when Sega cloned the SN76489A for the SMS, Genesis and GG). The slight differences in the noise channel make some samples to sound different, sometimes more "hiss-y", others more "bass-y" and certain tone frequencies don’t sound quite right.
The extra CPU power could also mess with the results, although I’m just speculating on this one. Maybe I’m just too purist about it, but is what I have found with the Game Boy hardware, I’ve got almost them all, the only ones I don’t have is the pocket and the GBA micro.
There are also a couple of games that use the SPC chip when played through the Super Game Boy. Which, by the way, is not a good hardware to record GB sound from because of the slightly off clock speed unless it is the Japan-only SGB2 (for the SPC sound, it’s OK since it still runs at its normal speed).

The reason I don’t rip on a real GBC is because without modification, the sound output on GBC is extremely noisy and low-bass. I’m aware that a few GBC games might sound wrong on the DMG, but that’s the whole point of this rip collection – that it’s all from a DMG. I’ve only put a few GBC-only soundtracks through the DMG, but so far they all sound great and run at the correct speed.
I also do own an SGB2 and a Super Famicom and am aware of all the hardware differences, but again the SNES/SFC needs modification for clean audio (which I don’t have the skill or money for). I’ll have to leave "true GBC" and SGB rips to someone else out there.
100% with animals, blueprints, side missions, main missions and all objetives or bust.

EDIT: I had some notes here about some unknown tracks and a broken track, but it turns out all I needed to do to find the answers was to pop the actual game into a GBC and take a look at the sound test that kirbyhammer7 mentioned earlier in the thread. It gave me the titles for the two unknown tracks and confirmed that the "broken" track ("Underground") that I thought was due to a bad conversion is actually just broken in the game itself. I had been comparing it to the existing copy that’s floating around (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg56TM1XXPQ), which comes from Jake Kaufman’s site before he took it down. His version clearly has a working percussion track, but the actual in-game copy is just a stuttering mess. Guess they missed that one in testing. It’s a minor track anyway, but I’m glad to know my rip isn’t "broken". I’ll update the files accordingly. I’ll put a "(1.1)" on the filename so you know you’re downloading the right one.
Enjoy!

I was just kidding about the spoiling thing, of course you wouldn’t know about a surprise, lol.
I’m aware of the Super Game Boy enhancement to DK94, but like I’ve said earlier in the thread I wouldn’t be able to do an SGB rip without considerable noise since my Super Famicom is unmodded. I mean I could do it anyway just to show you what it sounds like, but the result would be less than perfect.
Here is the copy of the Super Game Boy enhanced credits theme I have. (https://mega.nz/#!DIwGmYCA!lyfaET0tIRByKd1MvSMjnw0za8rwmm0uTz4k40IdCZk)
Also, glad I was (sort) of help. I didn’t think of the whole non-gbc thing, but I guess it still helped a little in the end. Great to have you back!
(By the way, how do you find the artist names for these? Is it just through credits screens and instruction booklets?)
I have a question too:
Are you, by chance, planning to do a DMG Sound Series rip of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX too? I’d love to have its soundtrack in the best possible quality!
OH MY GOD, I’d love that! One of THE best Zelda games, in terms of music.
I’m also this is my favourite game and for me the best game on Game Boy 😀 Today i have this cartrigde to Game Boy Classic 😉
Yeah, I’m going to have to second this request as well, unfortunately. The world needs more ML2.

This is the best way for ripping gameboy music.
Sure! It’ll be a while until I do requests, though. As I’ve said before, I’d like to do all my personal favorites before I move on to requests. And as I’m sure everyone here knows, I’m not the fastest worker. 😛 Stick around for when that happens, though, because once I start ripping from games I’ve never played myself, I will need help from others to tag and arrange the songs into a proper album.
I have been working on the project again lately, though. Pokemon GSC is coming quite soon! It’s taken so long because it’s over 100 tracks, but I’m finally almost finished.
This is the best way for ripping gameboy music.
This is subjective. It’s certainly the easiest way, but most (if not all) GB sound emulators (such as GBS players and media plugins) do not accurately recreate the sound that comes out of an actual Game Boy. I listen to GB soundtracks often, and I got tired of the subpar emulation in the various GBS players and other rips already floating around. I got a flashcart and switched to listening from a real GB, and I can’t go back. The difference is huge. So I started recording from my GB so I didn’t need to carry it around anymore, and it birthed this project.

Thank you, but I already have the GBS rips for many games. They are what I use to make my recordings. I load them onto a real Game Boy system and play them back through the sound chip.
Yeah but recording the music from a real Game Boy make the music sound with high pitched

Like I said, it is subjective. Some people prefer the real hardware, since it is indisputably the authentic sound. Ripping from emulation can be cleaner and easier, but it will ultimately always be flawed in some way compared to the real thing. I grew up playing Game Boy with headphones, so I’m accustomed to and prefer the real thing. I started this project mainly for myself, so I’m going to keep doing it as long as I have the time and interest. If people want emulated rips, they can easily find them elsewhere.

Presenting: Pokmon GSC. At last, one of the games I’ve wanted to do since the start of the project. Weighing in at over 100 tracks, it’s the largest album I’ve done yet. I even properly tagged all composer and artist data for every track, since the HGSS Super Music Collection contains that info.
This release also marks the debut of a new album cover art style that I’ve designed. I plan on redoing all past releases with this new style. I’ll be sure to upload an "update pack" for anyone who wants the updated covers without having to re-download every album.
But wait, there’s more! Notice I’m calling this release "in Mono". That’s right, I’m already underway with re-ripping the entire game in stereo mode. All the timing and tagging work is already done in the mono version, so the stereo version won’t take nearly as long. I believe the games were originally composed in mono, since the stereo mode just uses artificial channel separation (which isn’t that good, in my opinion). So I did the mono version first since that’s what I personally wanted. But I know some other people prefer the stereo version. I have both the mono and stereo sound data rips, so I might as well use them.
Enjoy, and Play It Loud!
Seriously though, you doing this and Shantae is a dream come true. Now I have two of my favorite soundtracks ever, in a quality I can actually listen to (Not emulator rip).
Keep up this amazing work. Thanks a million! 🙂
Thank you so much for this!
Here’s the new RBY cover art if anyone just wants to get that without re-downloading the whole album (click for full-size):
I think it sounds way more authentic, which is what People in this Thread like. That Super Mario Land Rip is godly, sounds great
and the Nostalgia Factor for me growing up in the 90’s with my Gameboy is through the Roof. 🙂
Please don’t stop, you’re doing the Lord’s Work. :p
I am sure People have requested a lot of Stuff so it’s kinda pointless but i’ll throw one in anyway.
Skate or Die : Bad n’ Rad is one of my absolute favourite OSTs on the Brickboy,
but then basically everything by Konami/Palcom is.
& often i am connecting my GB to my Hi-Fi to enjoy musics done by its soundchip.
Batman, Belmont’s Revenge, Solar Striker, Operation C, ZAS, Mariolands & more.
also often i mind "i should rip it" but as i never took the time to setup my PC line-in, i never do.
maybe i’ll do & if i do i will contact you first ;).
cheers for a good thread & keep up the good GB musics recording.

Yeah man, go for it. We could always use more hardware rippers. Your situation is pretty much exactly how I started doing it; I listened to it directly from the DMG all the time and then decided one day to just rip it. If you want to collaborate in any way, I’d be all for it.
The idea reminds me of the Pokemon HG/SS soundtrack, I think it included the original music recorded directly from a gameboy. It sounds like they stuck a microphone to the gameboy speaker on a recording studio? Or maybe it was emulated and they just added some reverb.

Actually the HGSS "GB" versions are from a DS. In the game itself you can unlock an item that changes the in-game soundtrack over to the GB version, but it’s a very inaccurate recreation. That’s what they put on the official soundtrack rather than the actual GSC GB soundtrack, which to this day has never been officially released.
Here’s a comparison of the two:

like this it fits very well in your thread & not like something coming from the outside 😉
so…
i proudly present my first DMG Sound job.
& actually after a re-listen of my old .gbs rip, i can say that it’s incomparable with the true sound !!!
just trashed my old rip.
here ya go !

one of my first GB game, i found some similarities with Marioland in their era.
both are great plateformers with little sprites & also alternative shmup stages.
one of my favourite game on the GameBoy.
Enjoy !

If you’ve never heard of this game before, there’s a good reason why: It was never released. Planned for a 2001 release by Affinix Software, it never found a publisher (due to the GBA being the new big handheld on the block) and sank into the depths of time. I was contacted by someone late last year, though, with a copy of the near-finished game’s internal sound data. In light of the sudden and welcome news that this game will finally be polished and released digitally (http://www.retrocollect.com/News/long-lost-game-boy-color-rpg-infinity-nears-official-release.html), I’ve gotten around to finishing up my DMG rip of its soundtrack. Not sure if the data I have is the actual final soundtrack, but it’s pretty damn good.

Oh, awesome to see you finished the RBY/GSC soundtracks too! 😀
Oh, awesome to see you finished the RBY/GSC soundtracks too! 😀
I tagged him as composer since it was apparently Mathew Valente who actually engineered the GBC version of the music (which is also how I tagged the Pokmon soundtracks since we know both composer and sound engineer roles for those songs thanks to the official soundtracks). But I dunno, now that you mention it they do seem to credit Hache as the primary artist on the official sites. Maybe I should change it.
Also thanks, it took me a while to finish the Pokmon ones. I still have to finish GSC stereo, though.
Not sure why this post never showed up in my inbox… But I just learned of their official soundtrack release today via Mathew Valente’s YouTube channel. I bought it, of course, and I urge everyone else to do the same. 😉
The official release was actually done with the PlayGuy GBC emulator, which is a very odd choice, in my opinion, since that emulator was last updated in 2003. We have much better options these days like BGB or Gambatte. As such, their release does sound rather different from mine; lots of effects (particularly percussion/noise channel) sound different. However, their release does contain a few tracks mine doesn’t. Not sure if they’re unused tracks or just tracks that are in the final game that aren’t in my old GBS rip. Oddly, my rip contains an unused beta track that isn’t in the official one. I dunno! Get both! Enjoy it all!
Now that the official release has given me a proper tracklist order, new titles, and a vectorized logo, I’ve updated my own version with all that stuff. Just use the same links in the original post. If you prefer the older, blocky cover, you can still get it here ().
What would these improvements be for the GBS2GB method? On the other, I have a Game Boy Colour still in working condition, and the 3DS version of Yellow, but the idea of playing through the entire game for music is impractical for me at the moment. Not to mention some music, such as battle music, is interrupted by cries and other sound effects.
Quality. If you have a GBC flashcart then you could do it, but the sound on an original Game Boy is supposedly far superior (Thread 188588). Recording right from a 3DS…I’m not sure. It is an official Nintendo system, so it might sound quite good, but I’ve never played and Virtual Console games on mine so I wouldn’t know. Also, there would be the issue of sound effects.
I tried KiGB but I’m not too sure if it can force a GBC soundtrack through the GB DMG-001. It has emulation options that change between GB, Super GB and such but I don’t know if it also affects the way the sound is emulated…
Is anyone interested in this too?
(Sorry for the double post)
Very interesting, I was about to perform the same test when I had the time. Yeah at first I couldn’t tell the difference either, but I took those samples you provided (great song btw, never heard of that game) and compared them in Audacity. I took the first channel from both so it’s easier to compare. The results are very interesting actually! (http://imgur.com/a/EyiTW) Up is GBC, down is GB.
At the very least, it does confirm that KiGB changes the way it treats the sound depending on the emulation mode. In the first image, you can clearly see the waveforms are totally different yet the song sounds just the same in both cases. It’s also surprising how the waveforms have a little delay between them (images 2 and 3), but it just seems like a effect from a different processing method rather than an inaccuracy with the sound emulation.
If we consider the one with more linear wave movement as the better one like the link in the OP says (http://www.herbertweixelbaum.com/comparison.htm) and compare them like in image 4, it looks like the one in the bottom is better in general. And I think it’s no coincidence that it happens to be the GB sample. At least I guess, I’m no expert haha…
But yeah, there is a difference. Now the next steps would be to test if this resulting audio is indeed different than your average vgmstream, GBS-direct rip, and testing if KiGB with the GB emulation mode treats sound as if it was processed by a very DMG-001 chip (just comparing one of the songs in any of Shugo’s rip and one made with KiGB would be enough) or if it differs and how much. If it ends up being the same, hopefully, we strike gold and can easily do trusty DMG rips without recurring to external hardware. If not, at least let’s hope the difference is not big… In any case, recording from KiGB would definitely be a thing for more accurate soundtracks.
Pokemon Red sounds way, WAY better than the official soundtrack. And I finally found a Pokemon Gold rip in FLAC. ^^ 😀 😀 And Super Mario Land sounds divine 😍 I just had to download the rest! I hope you’re still active because I want to say thank you SOOOOO MUCH!!! ♥⊂( ❥ ` ⊂ ) Especially for the FLAC. Don’t be surprised you’re getting requests, since your quality is so good. 🙂
Is that really all you could think of to say about this wonderful project? Obviously he plans to do Kirby, it’s a well-known game.
Don’t need to be rude, I love all he has done. I just wished there were Kirby releases now.
I don’t think he’s actively producing these rips though… His latest ones are from 2016.
exactly :V
