Glenn Miller Orchestra 1960s Reunion & Silver Jubilee Concerts

I am delighted to share my remastering of two live concerts by original members of the Glenn Miller Orchestra from 1961 & 1962. The first concert, performed on May 26, 1961 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, was the first time the majority of the original surviving musicians and singers of Miller’s Band were reunited to perform together live since the end of World War II. The second concert, performed in Las Vegas’ Sahara Hotel a year later commemorated the Silver Jubilee of the Band. The headliners at both concerts were Tex Beneke, Ray Eberle, Paula Kelly & The Modernaires along with the majority of musicians who played under Glenn Miller before his death. This was not the post WWII Glenn Miller “Ghost” Orchestra which recorded for RCA led by Tex Beneke & others but, as close as was possible, the actual band members from Miller’s time, many of whom came out of retirement to perform. Even though it was nearly two decades after WWII ended, everyone was still musically at the height of their powers and both concerts were recorded in stereo by Warner Bros. Records but the resulting LPs were withdrawn fairly quickly and to my knowledge have never been reissued in any format since. I have remastered and remixed the musical highlights of both concerts from a 1/2 inch reel to reel tape copy of the WB master tapes and the sound is simply wonderful. I avoided removing too much hiss from these pre-Dolby recordings since doing so undermined the excellent high end. As for the performances, this is the kind of exciting, virtuoso musicianship that one seldom encounters with today’s performers, the kind of music-making that transforms any time of the year into a joyous, special event.
