Andre Previn Soundtrack Song Book – Lyrics by Dory Previn

This is a compilation of songs composed by Andre Previn in the 1950s & 60s for various musical & non-musical films, most with lyrics by his then wife, Dory Langdon Previn. Putting all these songs together has given me a much greater appreciation of Dory Previn’s brilliant but often cynical and occasionally shocking lyrics, which include references to sexual obsession, gang murder, casual sex and other subjects I thought were taboo in Hollywood films of this period and certainly unexpected in frothy films such as PEPE but ahead of their time even in 60s films designed to be more adult in nature such as INSIDE DAISY CLOVER & VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. How the Previns managed to get these lyrics past the Hollywood establishment and the censors is not at all surprising since Andre Previn had a flair for writing dazzling and infectious show tunes and this often masked what Dory was trying to say in her lyrics on the first listen (and perhaps the second). One of the most astonishing tracks is the Academy Award nominated song from PEPE, "The Far Away Part of Town", a 5 minute melancholy torch song sung to absolute perfection by Judy Garland, a tribute to her greatness not only as a singer but, also an actress. Garland, Ann-Margret, Dionne Warwick, Tony Scotti and Bobby Darin are the only famous singers in this compilation. The rest of the songs are sung by some of the best studio singers of the time dubbing the non-singing actors in the films. The orchestrations in these songs are especially wonderful and include contributions by Al Woodbury, Robert Franklyn, Herbert Spencer, John Williams, Frank Comstock, Marty Paich, Alexander Courage & Johnny Green.

Some of you may have never heard these songs before but I suspect that many of you have on the various and mostly out of print soundtrack LPs that featured them.
