@Lockdown – has the Despicable Me 2 FYC ever been shared here before? I don’t think I’ve seen it. What’s the track list? I know the DM FYC had a lot of the score (minus most of Vector’s cues), especially compared to the song-only OST. But DM2 did have a fair amount of score on the OST.

And sell the original discs again, to make some money for new discs…

For me, I prefer to have CDs because they almost always guarantee lossless quality. (While we’ve learned in the past that this is not always the case, though). Having CDs is the only way to obtain high-quality versions of this sort of music, unless it leaks elsewhere in high quality. (Such as various recording sessions have done). This particular score, the HTTYD2 FYC is only available in 192kbs on the DWAAWARDS website. However, this physical FYC disk will provide at least 320kbps, if not lossless. (I’ve never known an FYC to be lossy).

I understand just fine. It’s you who don’t seem to realize that I am far from the only one who gets notifications whenever a How to Train Your Dragon promo pops up on eBay. After the first film, it was only natural for me to expect the first sequel promos to go for hundreds of dollars and given that fact, I thought our best chance of getting the music was to pool our money together early, so we could submit as high of a bid as possible in the auction’s last seconds.

I bought it on eBay a while ago, as it was the cheapest I could find. The tracklist and artwork are identical to the OST, but for some reason it’s in a cardboard sleeve and says it’s "For Promotional Use Only, Limited Edition, Not For Sale". Any idea what this actually is?!

The fact that there are frequencies up to 22kHz depends on the fact of the compression method used. While most will just cut the frequencies off around 15kHz, the one used for the webrip obviously tried to preserve the higher frequencies to contain as much quality as possible while minimizing filesize. Here’s an example spectrogram of the first song, Dragon Races. You can see that most of the frequencies are still in fact cut off around the 16kHz mark. In my opinion, it having a little bit of the extra frequencies preserved doesn’t make a difference if you cut everything else off 😐 That makes them unnoticeable, and while, yes, it sounds better than a standard 192kbps file with no higher frequencies, it still sounds like utter shit to me. But that’s just my opinion. What I am hoping for with the FYC CD is that, even if it is lossy sourced, it will still be at least a 320kbps upconvert. Which will still be better sounding than the webrip. Also, this file in particular is 87% compressed.

The leak that was taken down a while back was labeled "expanded", but I’ve seen the film several times and it looked virtually complete to me.

Also, I have a question.
Back when the FYC disks for HTTYD first appeared, it was toted that the 2CD version was not lossless, and in fact Studio Upconvert, but it was claimed that the 1CD WAS lossless. However, when I compare spectrograms of the 1CD to the 2CD, they are identical. They even SOUND identical, and lossless too. Could it be that the original poster’s material wasn’t ripped in lossless, or, is the 1CD in fact NOT lossless, or, are they BOTH lossless and eveyone’s just crazy?! What’s going on here..

I don’t remember the reason behind the two versions, but it’s not the first time that’s happened. And about the Lego FYC, it is one disk and doesn’t have the song. As per the differences between the Commercial Soundtrack and the FYC, I do not know.
It’s an okay collection 😛 I find that, more and more FYC scores I really want just end up being commercial soundtrack duplicates, so I haven’t bought any in a little while..

Are you sure? I could swear that like all WB FYCs within the past few years (AUJ, TDKR, Argo) they were identical to the OST.

I will treasure the signed vinyl by Sam Smith. I should get it authenticated or something, although, I think it is real.
For Your Consideration is directed towards the Golden Globe and the Academy members. Film Studios send out these promotional CDs to these members for them to consider which one they feel is most deserving of the Best Original Score for that year. There are among 200 films usually chosen to be in contention, but in the end, there will be the ‘top’ 5 picks coming close to the Oscars, and those top 5 are the one’s that have the chance of winning the Oscar. Usually it is given to the score that accompanies a film that had done well critically, it’s never really been for the score itself, or even the composer. Not sure what will when this year though, possibly something like Bridge of Spies.

FYC stands for "For Your Consideration" and are CDs sent out to Academy voters so they can listen and increase the chances of it being nominated for "Best Original Score". The FYC CD’s sometimes include more material or film versions etc to more accurately represent the score as heard in the film unlike the OST which may use the composer’s preferred version over the film version (which is chosen by the Director) or be a collection of suites or have been pressed too early to include last minute additions to the score. Some FYCs contain new material, but some don’t. Some include less material than the OST. It’s different for each film.
At the end of each year, the studios release press sites which is their campaign for their films to get all the Oscar nominations. And not all, but most studios release FYC scores – to get the best original score Oscar. Some are put on disc, some are only released on the FYC sites. Sometimes they’re identical to the OST release, sometimes they’re completely different. These versions can include film mixes, and sometimes they’re nearly the complete score. So they become highly sought-after.
